ATTENTION People with Western Digital 120GB (1200JB) Special Edition Hard Drives (8MB Buffer): How loud is your drive?

As the title states, people that own or have used the Western Digital 120GB special edition Hard Drive (8MB buffer), how loud is your drive? I am asking because I recently acquired two 120GB hard drives (brand new) and they seem to be emitting strange noises.

During the initial bootup, you hear them spinning up loudly (louder than say a 40GB 7200rpm drive, close to a 10k SCSI drive sound, it sounds like something it hitting against whatever is spinning) and then afterwards there's lots of seeking noises (random loud seek noises that sound like something clattering/clicking inside the drives).

Does anyone experience the same thing? Is this normal for this drive to make those noises? Since it's about as loud as a SCSI 10k rpm drive (1st generation). :(

If not, do you think it's just a phyiscal error with BOTH of my drives, since both make the same noise? Let me know if I should RMA it.

Thanks in advanced. ;)

And yes, I've checked all the parts to make sure where the noise is coming from, and it is definitely the 120GB drives, since without them powered up, the computer is a whole lot quieter. ;)

My 120JB is very quiet..then again, it runs 24/7 so I dont hear it spin up.
My other 2 120gb (2mb cahce) are on the motherboards power save.. I do hear them spin up, but no seek noises..

I picked up a JB from Dell during one of their infamous weekend sales. So far it's working just fine. It's a quiet drive, much more so than the 75GXPs it replaced.

You might want to purchase a replacement from newegg. They package hard drives well (at least those I've received) with packing peanuts over a 3-4" think layer of anti-static bubble wrap.

Have it but hard to tell when the Delta 7200 RPM fan is on and in a heavy metal case. But I would say it doesn't make wierd sounds.

Hmm...well I guess I'm just an isolated situation then since most people are reporting good experiences with the drives. I'm RMA'ing the drives with Dell now... :( Both make clicking noises everytime the drives spin up.

Oh, and just wanted to mention, Dell did a horrible job packaging these in a tiny box. :(
