After seeing that a lot of people enjoyed The Godfather trilogy, I guess a thread on topic would be good :) What are your favorite mafia/gangster/underworld movies? Al Pacino dominates my list: The Godfather Trilogy, Scarface, Donnie Brasco, Carlito's Way, Serpico... damn he is a great actor. My other favorites would be: The Untouchables, Goodfellas, Resorvoir Dogs, etc... other movies up there: The Usual Suspects, L.A. Confidential.. and more...

So what are your favorites and why? Why do these appeal to men so much? :) Let's discuss.

Pacino is one of favorites for sure. I think there is something to be said about the fearlessness, the willingness to die for either 1) honor or 2) nothing at all.

Lots of good choices up there.

Casino, Goodfellas, The Untouchables, Scarface, Usual Suspects, LA Confidential, Reservoir Dogs, etc.....

They appeal to me (and my wife) because they're just good movies in general. Great acting, well-written storylines and so on. Not to mention, I've been interested in the mob from a historical standpoint for quite some time and the darker side of society and people usually makes for an interesting story in general.

Edit: I'd add Blow, Traffic, Heat, Boondock Saints and Road To Perdition to this list as well.

Gentlemen, you would be remiss not to mention Miller's Crossing! I agree with just about ALL of the other movies mentioned as well.

I just saw a great movie about the New York Mafia that I rented at Redbox. It's called "At the Sinatra Club", and it tells the true story of John Gotti's early years. I would definitely recommend it to fans of mafia movies.

There are many good foreign gangster type movies:

The Long Good Friday
A Taxing Woman (sorta about yakusa)
A Dirty Carnival

my favorite movie, by a mile, is goodfellas. 10/10.

great story! the whirlwind of highs and lows is never so superlative as to be ridiculous, and when characters are ridiculous they're still very believable. there's tons of contrast in the story as well as the movie making. the period-correct music really immerses the viewer in the show, as does the narrative and camera work. this movie has a lot of texture.

Heat is probably my all time favorite movie.

Also loved:

Goodfellas
Casino
Donnie Brasco (a bit slower than the others, but good)

Goodfellas/Casino and Donnie Brasco are generally regarded as the most accurate portrayals of the real cosa nostra. The Sopranos is also excellent, and very much worth the time investment.

The Godfather 1/II (particularly II) are excellent, excellent films, but mostly fantasy.

I also like:
The Departed
Heat
A Bronx Tale (more of a growing-up, father-son, love type story); but it was directed by DeNiro from a play and script by Chaz Palmienteri, both of whom are excellent in the film.

Reservoir Dogs is more of a caper "crew" movie (like Heat), and it's good. I'm so fucking sick of it, though, and can't bring myself to watch it ever again.

Once Upon a Time in New York
that recent Ridley Scott film about John Lucas was pretty good.

I absolutely HATED that stupid Guy Ritchie flick: The Real Rock'n'Rolla
