Attention Golf Gurus, advice needed...

I plan to start playing golf next Saturday, July, 10th with 3 other guys, so I need to grab a cheap set of clubs quick!

I am new to the sport, so I want something under $200 that would be decent brand and quality. Please recommend some sets, stores, and possibly links or prices!

Are these any good?

Thanks for the advice!

good beginner set.

I'm amazed at what one can get nowadays for 200 bucks.

I hope you dont plan to hit up the field right away.
Best option would be to get some lessons and hit up the range.

You should not play golf with these guys, if they have played alot before this. You will look bad, and may mess their game up. No Offense.

Also, get some clubs that are fitted for you, they will help very MUCH.

Well the guys I'm playing with know I'm new and will be my teachers. We are only playing for fun right now, at a small par 3 course. I just want to try it out for a while before I get into practicing at the driving range and investing a lot of time and money. I've played maybe 3 times in the last ten years, and always had a blast, but just never had the time, money, or oportunity to get involved. But now I do! 🙂

edit To reply to the post above, these guys are all good friends and coworkers, and like I said it is just for fun at this point. So they aren't worried about their game, and I'm not worried about looking bad. 🙂

Those are perfectly acceptable for a beginners set and the price is right, but I still suggest you don't buy them. As you're unlikely to stick with the game, any investment is a risk. Try to borrow a set from a friend or relative first, that way if you quit you're not out anything. If borrowing is impossible and you absolutely MUST buy a set, those will be fine.

I'd get a set at a garage sale. If you do stick with the game, you're going to beat that first set up with terrible swings. Borrowing a set can be risky, since the aforementioned abuse can do some serious damage to that friend's clubs, and that would only make you more self conscious. If you have your own set, even for $15 at a garage sale, at least they're yours. You can throw them out when you get better.

For the poster who suggested fitted clubs, that is throwing your money away at this point. I play to a 4 handicap and my clubs are stock. (I bend them if necessary, but it usually isn't.) Standard loft/lie is fine for anyone who has played the game less than three years--your setup and stance with change with practice anyway.

Also, if you're going to get real instruction, look for clinics or group stuff. Much cheaper and just as valuable for a beginner, so you can afford to do it more often.

And, don't get on the course too early. You'll only get more frustrated, and while you may not annoy your friends with your poor play, I can bet you that the groups that pile up behind you as you play a 5 1/2 hour round will be plenty annoyed. 🙂

Oh, and good luck. Enjoy!
