Congratulations are in order, computers are so powerful now. However the good of computer power is under real fire, I am under real fire from the State of Georgia. They are prosecuting me saying the Dnet client is an incredibly bad thing and a Felony and damaged them in a way that they want nearly half a million dollars in damages as well ! I need everyone's help that can prove that this Internet Technology for the good of computing and world is not a Felony action. If the Technology is in fact so bad, the Technology itself and the websites such as SETI and Dnet should not be in existence and not going after one individual.

Please contact any way that you can. My lawyer is David Joyner cdjoyner66@aol.com or Law Firm number is 770-564-1600

Thank you

dmcowen

Uh oh. DMcOwen, I thought we'd lost you for good, and it's great to hear from you again! But the circumstances that bring you back are the worst. 🙁 🙁 🙁

May I start by directing your attention to this thread. The fact is, anyone looking at the SETI Large Company Teams list can see that SETI is embraced by a who's-who of security-concious companies and corporations whose data, security, and equipment ARE very valuable to them. Since SETI is the largest DC project in the world, it sets a good precedent. Your lawyer should be able to make some headway with that, and perhaps you could get an expert witness in the form of one of the big-wig network admins from one of those companies.

Come on, everyone, let's rally in support of one of our crackers emeritus. 🙂

Thanks Mech,

I sent an E-mail to the Knoxville Newspaper asking them for info from the article about the 17 TVA employees that have been charged for running SETI. The article is no longer on the Newspaper website archives. I hope as many people can come to Atlanta for support when my Trial starts. My lawyer thinks the trial would last at least a week.

DMcOwnen, what's your email address? I sent an email to your lawyer and I'd like to send it to you too. Please hurry, got to go to work in a minute here.

Thanks Engineer for re-naming the thread, everything and anything helps at this point.

From an Embattled Engineer

Dave McOwen

Fighting for my life!
My wife and family thanks everyone too!
She could lose everything she has worked so hard for.
We have already wiped out our savings and borrowing to pay Lawyer just to open the case for defense.

The E-mail address I normally use now is the same as the ISP service here is Bellsouth so it's dmcowen@bellsouth.net

Also the now infamous Dnet address of when I only had a AOL address is still live for now at dmcowen674@aol.com

I didn't hide anything, if I had something to hide I would not have put my regular E-mail address in the client ID.

Thanks Mech and everyone

Not sure how much Dave, but if you have a PayPal account, I would like to donate a little to your defense fund. I'm sure that many here as well as elsewhere would like to do the same. PM me if you have one? (or post it here for all to see).

If you don't, maybe a quick creation of one for this reason. I can't think of a better cause.

I'll second that, Engineer. DMcOwen, I apologize, I hit the Save button but I can't find a local copy of the email that I sent to your lawyer. I did ask him to forward it to you, however, so you'll see it eventually. Got to jam for work now. Hang in there!

Thank You Engineer. I used to stay on top of the latest computer anything but this has soured me. I do not even know what a Paypal account is.

I am touched and humbled by this whole experience now and probably for as long as I live.

David,

PM me so that I may reply (or enably your PM's) on how to set up a PayPal account (easy). With a PayPal account, we can e-mail money directly to you and you can dump it into your bank account directly. There is a small fee (%) but not bad for the ease of sending the money.

David, we're glad to help. The charges are nonsense.....if Georgia is paying .59 per second for internet access, then they all need to be prosecuted! :| More like, .000059 cents per hour and the other .5899999 is for the lawyers and politicians!!! :|:|:|

Thanks Engineer,

What's a PM? Is that like IM, Instant Messages? Speaking of IM's, people have those things enabled on their machines everywhere including the school I used to work at, aren't they transmitting even more IP packets constantly with full sentences like E-mail than the little couple of data bursts that Dnet sends and recieves?

I will look into the Paypal thing. I really hate to impose or ask for anything. My wife and I go paycheck to paycheck like everyone else paying for 2 vehicle leases and our house Mortgage, we will lose everything very fast and I will never be able to work again as a convicted Felon and if they put me in prison for years anyway never able to pay nearly half million dollars to a State even after getting out of prison. They will garnish my wages for the rest of my life and still never get all that money, I have never made more than $45,000 a year as a computer engineer. I'm not a programmer.

David,

PM = private message. You can enable it in your profile under "Allow Private Messages". To PM me, look for the little lock in any thread that I've posted (orange lock). Click on that, and it will PM me. I can't PM you as you don't have them enabled right now, but once you PM me, I can PM you back (I think). To check for PM's (new ones or old ones), just click on the little lock right under the Anandtech banner at the top of any forum page (left side top).

Also,

PayPal is very easy to set up, but it does cost a % or 2 for using it over certain amounts ($100.00 per month, I think). I can't donate much (I have bills too 🙁), but I would love to help as I'm sure many others would be too.

Figure on AIM taking about 200 bytes to send or receive a message. If it's going through AOL's servers, that'd be 400 bytes per message sent. My inbuffer for OGR is about 2K, I don't know about RC5. So if I'm not completly off, you'd download from dnet as much as you'd download sending 5 messages and I don't know about upload.

Anyways we all can provide a defense fund for him. Wellchip into one, i would like to throw in some has well.
