store in the fridge or out in the open?

1998 Chateau Giraud "White Bordeaux"

I bought this yseterday at Costco (surprisingly enough) and this is one of the best wines I've ever tasted. I do not know where to store it though.

TIA

As a moderate wine connoisseur, you can't really keep whites that long... I would bet in the fridge (assuming you don't have a 58 degree wine cellar), but I would drink it fairly soon..

Is this the same bottle, or do you have more bottles? In other words, are you asking about how to store opened bottles, or are you asking about how to cellar wine?

If the latter, then out in the open is sufficient if you plan on drinking it soon. Keep it away from heat, store it on its side (for natural cork) and out of direct light. Whites are more tolerant than reds for a lot of conditions, but nevertheless you want to take care to avoid any changes in the wine.

If you're asking how to store an opened bottle, then I'll tell you what I do. I've used every method available, including nitrogen-purging systems. The best way is to simply reduce the head space, and the best method I've found is to immediately decant an opened bottle to two half bottles. Serve out of one half bottle and keep the other corked and stored normally.

What wine is it?

[edit]I thought I'd add that you can't store a wine for the long-term outside of cellar conditions. That includes managing humidity, light, vibration, temperature and in some cases mold spore, bacteria, etc. Granted, you're probably not going to cellar a bottle for 10+ years, but if you ever did it's a much larger investment to keep the bottle in good condition.[/edit]
