wow, talk about a heated meeting. both camps (for and against) were pretty rialed up. each person had 3 min to speak their peace to the board of trustees and it was interesting to see both view points.

I havent made up my mind yet on this issue, our little town (about 2000 people) does need some economic growth but im not sure prison growth is the right direction to go. We still have dirt roads in town and desperatly need that money but like i said im not so sure its the right path to take.

2 years ago a power plant was proposed to be built on some farmland that is part of the town but it was shot down because a lot of outside influences swayed people to vote against it. so what did the power company do? they moved the site 1/2 mile down the road and built it anyway our town is out nearly 3million a year in revenue. there is still a lot of bad blood over that deal and was brought up many times tonight.

Oh there were 5 sheriffs deputies there just in case somebody couldnt keep their hostility to just words. and 2 news crews were there to film the action....

anway another public meeting will be held on April 4th of which i will be attending. I guess the prison (cornell) will be addressing a lot of questions and concerns brought up by the citizens of the town. cant wait for that.

im going to take my two oldest kids to that meeting so they can get a good civics lesson.

Oh, the sweet irony! :p

If all the towns in the state voted not to construct a new prison, then the government would have more money and incentive to prevent the lifestyles that lead towards incarceration.

I would not want a prison in my town. The good thing about dirt roads is that no one wants to drive on them.

Wishful thinking at it's very finest.

I wouldn't want a prison in my town either. But if there is need for another prison in the area, it's going to have to be built somewhere. If they can just move it down 1/2 a mile like the power plant, you might as well suck it up and sign off.

Besides, the entire point of prisons is to keep the undesireables locked up. Prison breaks are very very rare...just cause theres a prison nearby does not mean crime is going to skyrocket.

Property values may be an entirely different story though.

I don't suppose the town can do anything to promote industrial and commercial business growth? I have no idea what area you're in but you're better off promoting a good business environment, maybe incentives for developing commercial property.
