I need a tux and corresponding clothes, and a present. I know the groom. What stores should I try for the best deals? And most people usually just return the clothes the day after, no?

Looking to spend not more than $300, then I'll probably have to get pants and shoes.. ugh.

What sort of present should I get for the couple?

Here's where I live - there's a Men's warehouse nearby, a couple miles away there's a Macy's..

Well you could have rented one if you didn't wait to the day before.

Hm, wonder if I can do that now. It won't really be a big deal if I have to purchase one though, seeing as I don't even have a tux.

If you are not in the wedding party, do you really need a tux? If you have a regular suit or clean sweatshirt, you could probably wear that.

As for wedding gifts, cash is the best answer. Really. Otherwise, a gift certificate to a store that sells practical things, like Target or Homeowner Hell.

I'm going to be in the wedding party, pretty close friend - I'll also probably be helping them out, it's not like I'm a complete stranger.

If you are in the wedding party (grooms men and ushers), the groom (or best man) should have arranged the Tux for you so that everyone looks uniform. Most places have a deal where if the wedding party rents 'X' number of Tux's, the groom's is free.

Is this a really small wedding (I.e. 25 people or less)

Though this isn't really a traditional American wedding ( they aren't American ), so that's probably the explanation of why it wasn't arranged as such.

If you want a tux, get a tux. Wear it whenever you feel like wearing it. The odds of getting one that fits or can be altered in the next 24 hours are pretty slim.

it's pretty funny to wait till the day before the wedding to think about a tux.

but assuming you're within average height/weight ranges, you'll probably be safe heading to the largest tux rental place near you. you might not be able to find something that fits great (and it's way too short notice for alterations), but you should be able to get "something."

I wouldn't spend money buying a tux unless you can reasonably see yourself wearing it within the next 3 years.

Go to Macy's. Get a dress shirt, dress slacks, and a tie. You could buy a suit off the rack, but it won't look good until you take it to the tailor.

As for gifts, cash is never rejected. Ask around and see if the couple has setup a registry.

Like everyone said you shouldn't need a tux if you are not in the wedding party unless the reception is listed as "black tie".

that said it is hard to find a decent suit suit for $300 let alone a decent tux. That and the fact anything off the rack is unlikely to fit you well at all.

You are better off wearing a suit if you already own one that has been altered to fit you.

If you don't own one than your options are pretty limited and none of them are good so go with whatever is cheapest.

EDIT: I just read you are in the wedding party. That is pretty messed up for them to not have arranged this. You can go to Men's Warehouse and try to rent a tux and see if they can get it done ASAP.

Do not wear a sweatshirt by any means. LOL.

It was a reference to an old Wis/Minn joke...

Q: How do you pick out the bride at a Norwegian wedding?

A: She's the one in the clean sweatshirt.

A friend of mine from college wore a sweatshirt to her own wedding reception in deference to this joke. It was a very small reception at her parent's house. I wore a jacket and tie. People kept congratulating me because I was the best dressed person there and they concluded that I was the groom.
