you're not going to be losing money...deposit it

As long as you don't spend it.

If it's your own bank, it'll bounce and you'll pay a fee.

Don't you only pay a fee if the money is not there to cover its badness? At least I believe that is how it is at my bank.

Pretty much the only way you DON'T pay a fee is if the check is valid and there are sufficient funds.

Fat fucking chance of either of those.

I assume they mailed the check to you? Take it to the post office & tell the post master there everything. I'm not sure if Canada is the same as the U.S. when it comes around to people screwing with the P.O. Perhaps you can convince the scammer to give you their address. "I know I'm supposed to pay the moving company for you, but what I'd rather do is send the extra money back to you, plus I'll give you $100 back out of the first months rent in that check to cover your inconvenience of paying the moving company. I don't trust western union, because I've heard western union scams people out of their money, so I'm just going to send it to you in a thick padded envelope so that no one knows there's cash inside." It'd be great if people started doing things to help the authorities have little pieces of evidence as to who to go after.
