Attach cover letter or paste into email?

When applying to a job through e-mail do you generally just paste the cover letter into the body of an email or would there be a reason to attach it instead?

Once a job interviewer (partner @ Andersen) pointed out to me he would expect it attached to be printable in a good format (by his secretary obviously), while I put it in the body which really looked quite awful on his printout...and it was even the same mail client...
Well, got the job anyway but won't use the body again to transfer key messages 😉
Just keep the mail interesting enough to open the attachments 😛
