First, I'm not super tech savvy... yes, I build my own computers but things like networking make my brains leak out my ears. Please excuse me if I'm not using the proper terminology.

ATT finally updated my router from a cable-type router to CAT5 (internet coming into the house to the router.) I was in the process of running CAT6 cable to all of the computers (4), and used a daisy-chained Cisco router to feed the Ethernet to the PC's and provide wifi... cable router>Cisco router>Ethernet/wifi to devices... because it had enough Ethernet ports to do so. With the new ATT router, again, it does not have enough Ethernet ports for all my devices... but in the meantime the Cisco router has failed... so I'm going to need to come up with an Ethernet switch or router solution.

I also run a small home-based business, and I have quite a bit of proprietary and customer data on my work PC, the idea of adding a layer of security sounds pretty good, but in my sea of ignorance I have no idea how to go about it.

1) New ATT router is an Arris NVG599 (from what I've read, not the best router on the planet.)
2) I need Ethernet to 4-5 devices
3) I need wifi (which the ATT router provides, but I'm thinking security... how secure is it?)
4) I would like to add a layer of security, if possible. I understand that is a nebulous request.
5) Installing the hardware won't be the problem... configuring it will be. I'm looking for a solution that's simple stupid.

...actually, the more I read about the Arris router, the more I don't like it... including some pretty serious security vulnerabilities. From what I'm seeing, a lot of people have their Arris router set up to simply pass through the signal to a different, better router... I'm guessing sort of like I had my original setup, so I guess I will proceed under that assumption.

So, here is what I would recommend!

You are looking for SWITCH and not another router.

You would connect your AT&T router to the switch! From the switch, depending on how many ports you need (4, 8, 16, 24, 48), you could connect other wired devices.

Your original router would provide you security, but you can get better devices if you want to feel safer.

You could look in to Ubiquity equipment!
