So I was looking to unlock my new shinny iphone when every site was either not available or the price jump up to over 25 bucks. These unlock used to be 2 bucks..

There's rumors that unlock server has been changed or servers are down. So how were people accessing these servers ? were these 2 dollar codes sort of illegal ? ie some guy paid another guy to put these codes in without going through proper channels ?

Yes, I'm pretty sure that's exactly how they worked. Just have patience.

Yeah I noticed today because I was thinking of doing mine. The place that used to charge me $2 is now $34.99.

Sucks.

Why are you buying an AT&T phone to unlock anyway?

Get the T-Mobile version; they either have the exact same bands, or the T-Mobile version has more bands.

I unlocked a T-Mobile HTC One (which gets perfect LTE reception on AT&T BTW) for $4 through eBay. It took 15 minutes total from when I submitted my IMEI to when I received my unlock code.

What if someone is an AT&T customer, bought a phone on subsidy, but wants to try out TMobile in their area before they decide to switch?

What if someone decides to switch and wants to bring their phone? If you did things the official way, you'd have to port your number to a TMobile SIM, wait for AT&T to send you a final bill, pay it, then request an unlock through AT&T. That whole process could take two weeks and you wouldn't be able to use your phone in the meantime.
