...got a text a couple of days ago from ATT, the amount of Data included in the iPhone4 Datapro tethering plan has been increased from 2GB to 4GB per month...with no price increase. They thanked me for being a great customer.

Now, at middling 3G speeds, how long would it take me to consume 4GB??

Isn't that package already like $45/mo? I'm not sure you should be thanking them.

So what? The point was that for that price it used to be 2GB and now it's 4GB. This coupled with their mobile to ANY carrier mobile minutes means they're finally getting serious about competing. Now that the iphone is loose they have to make it a bit more appealing to stay with them before everybody's contract expires and they can bounce to Verizon if they choose.

Competition is good, I'm excited to see what happens in the next year or so.

That's nice, but I'd like to see them do something about their data plans.

Maybe the OP can answer this for me, is the current AT&T tethering option only for wired tethering from the phone to a laptop, or can you also do it over bluetooth or wifi? (i.e. can I tether my iPad to the phone or do I have to wait for them to come out with the hotspot feature like the Verizon iPhone?)

Thanks

From what I understand is that any form of tethering is disabled by AT&T on the phones they sell now. You have to use their apps (on Android) or incorporated nanny tethering (on iOS) which either checks to see if you are paying for the tethering service or "tattles" on you.

You can hack some of the phones to re-enable OS support for native tethering or install apps that do not check/tattle. Once again this is what I have heard, others feel free to correct me on it.

Personally am using the Nexus One, which never came with any carrier OS/app restrictions using the grandfathered $30 5GB "unlimited" rate. So have the 5GB limit and able to wifi and usb tether without having to pay for the inane tethering package.

My 3GS was easily hitting 600-700kB/s on my provider's network (downloading, 3.dk, that's around 5Mbps). Let's say, with an average of 500kB/s (4Mbps), you can plow through those 4GBs in just under 2 hours and 15 minutes :p
