Hey guys, I haven't had an HTC phone since the original EVO. My dad has an iPhone 3gs right now but he is looking to go a little bigger. He only got the iPhone last time cause it was on sale, he is not a cell phone nerd. Is there anything about the One X that would make you stay clear? I remember the EVO had horrid battery life, but other than that it was a pretty good phone.

He doesn't have any apps that are iPhone only, he has generic apps like the Chicago Bears app and stuff like that. He wants to go cheap, otherwise I would point him towards the new One or S4. He doesn't mind having a later generation phone, as you could probably tell, he got the 3gs after the 4s came out. He mostly wants to go bigger.

TIA

The 3GS qualifies for AT&T's $100 credit trade in promotion according to a rep I spoke with a couple of days ago. It he trades it in, that's an instant $100 credit in store and that vastly opens your options up.

For $100, you can choose between the iPhone 4S, Lumia 920 or HTC 8X or a Galaxy S3 and LG Optimus G. I'd probably take any of those over a OneX.

If he's not a big techie and doesn't plan on doing a lot with it, I'd probably just say to stick with what he knows. But if he wants a bigger screen, I'd probably pick the Lumia 920 over the Android devices. If you're set on going Android, I'd pick the SGS3 over a OneX, simpl because of the software support.

If you can't or won't do the trade in, I'd really recommend considering the refurb Lumia 920 AT&T is offering for $1.

Wow, I didn't realize that. I just put in all his info on the ATT trade in website, and it is confirmed $100. That opens up the S3, which is what I have, and I love it. The only thing I have to check is whether he can transfer all his audible books to the android version of audible without re-buying them.

Thanks bearxor for the trade in advice.

He is going to go over to the ATT store tomorrow. I told him to look at the S3, the Lumia, and the 4s. Whatever one he likes he will get.

I would point out to your dad that he's likely spending over $1600 on his cellphone bill in a 24-month period, so saving $100 and not getting a $200 phone released this year doesn't make too much sense. Not that those aren't great phones, but would you rather spend $550 on the GS3 or $629 on the GS4 because with subsidized pricing, that's what you end up paying for the phone in the end.

Also, the iPhone is subsidized by $450 compared to unlocked price whereas every other phone is $350, so if you really want to make the most of it, what for a new iPhone to launch, sell it on eBay, then buy the phone you want.

Normally I'd completely agree that it's pointless to buy anything but the latest device when signing a two-year contract, but some people just don't care and want to come out with nothing out of pocket.

I'd like to propose one more idea for you swanysto, since you seem like you're probably leaning towards nudging him towards the SGS3. Have him trade in his 3GS, give him an extra $100, have him use his upgrade to get a SGS4, then give him your SGS3 and take the SGS4. You get an upgrade out of the deal and so does he.

Unfortunately we are on different carriers. He is going over to the ATT store today to look at all the phones. The only reason the GS3 came into play, is cause he likes mine, and he has no loyalty to any brand.

Gotcha. That's a bummer. Yeah, trade in the 3GS and pick something better or with a little more support (because I personally feel like the One X is a better phone than the SGS3, but HTC dropped it like a boulder off a cliff).
