OK I have a friend who recently moved from the country to in town and he is looking at getting Att Uverse dsl. He said they were wanting 100 bucks for a modem so I was like gtfo with that and found him one for 7 bucks. He tells me this morning that the rep said that the Netgear dsl modem/router combo wont work because the Uverse uses a fiber connection and he needs to buy their 100 dollar modem.

I think he just got a clueless rep, what do you think?

I'm not 100% positive but I think Uverse has its own equipment. Also I wasn't aware Uverse was DSL. Thought it was cable.

They may be true that you have to use theirs bu having to pay $100 sounds like BS to me. While a 3rd party modem may be configured to work, normally the settings is not something they'd want to hand out as they don't want to support 3rd party modems.

See if you can get ahold of tech support, ask them what kind of Dslam they are using. If it's a Stinger you should be able to just buy a Speedstream modem, they are not expensive.

Never heard of fiber used for DSL, it may be used for transport along the way to get to an AFC or another CO, but the "last mile" will be copper. If I actually had fiber coming inside my house, DSL would not be the type of internet I'd be buying...

If it is Uverse internet(VDSL/VSDL2), then they are correct the $7 modem isn't going to work.

If its ATT DSL(ADSL/ADSL2), then they are incorrect the $7 modem is going to work.

For Uverse VSDL/VSDL2 you are pretty much stuck with what they offer, not because there aren't other VDSL modems out there, but because Uverse only allows certain ones to provision on their network.

I'd call and claim poor mouth and then threaten to not get service if I can't get the modem for free or at minimum 50% off.

In some markets Uverse uses FTTP, just like Verizon FiOS and if you live in a multi dwelling unit Verizon FiOS is typically VDSL. But either way certain Uverse markets have fiber running to the premises, while in other Uverse markets its fiber with the "last mile" being copper. Not all Uverse is created equal. Same is true with FiOS.

you friend could also pay monthly to rent.

Probably better to buy it from them.

This. Your friend (and you) are wrong.

I'm on their dsl, (Yahoo/ATT). They've sent notices that at some point I'll have to switch to the cable/fiber. If UVerse is available there I would be surprised if they would even provision a dsl order.

I eventually had to switch because of that shitty router ATT requires you to use with uverse. It constantly screwed up it's DMZ passthough to my router (which I needed to use for any real wireless coverage) and locked up on a weekly basis.

I had it replaced twice by service calls and our service just sucked and sucked. I hate comcast, but unfortunately its my only other option, so they get my money and I get to use hardware that works.

They used to give away a 2Wire VDSL modem for free with Uverse, but you had to return it when you cancelled. Looks like they're actually selling them now.

As others have said, you can't use an ADSL modem on it.

There are basically two forms of Uverse DSL. There's what we call IPDSL, which is a form of ADSL, and they typically get Motorola NVG510 modems. Some store bought modems will work for ADSL.

There is also "real" Uverse, which is VDSL, and you have to use the AT&T provided 3600/3800/3801 modems. VDSL uses fiber to the neighborhood node, then copper to residence.

Anyway, if he's in a "real" Uverse area, he'll need the company provided equipment. Could've sworn they were doing $100 rebates for new service, for what is effectively a free modem, but I don't remember specifically.

Uverse typically works great, as long as your tech is competent, and recognizes and repairs any possible outside facilities issues.

I think they are on commission or quota. Have gotten different prices for the same package, been told that I "had to" take an addition to my existing package after the agreement ran out, etc.

Told them I'd just go with cable and they caved.

UVerse is available in two flavors...one VDSL based, one ADSL2+ based. In either case, they use certificate-based authentication, rather than PPPoE...which means you need a router that supports your particular flavor (which you don't know until it's installed) and that they support through their provisioning process.

Either way, the best thing to do is to buy the modem from them.
