ATOTers in Key West or surrounding areas...

Aharami

Lifer
Created this thread yesterday but didnt get too many responses.

So any ATOTers in Key West or surrounding areas, how is everything going down there? back to normal? Business as usual? or still no power/running water/etc?

broward county got it the worst....shamefull thing is you guys that aren't in broward/miami dade will hear nothing about. Hell even ifyou are in broward all you hear about is miami dade. Really makes me sick. My neighborhood and the surrounding neighborhoods are destroyed. Most of us still have no power as well as no water preasure. I understand this isn't as "severe" as new orleans b/c we don't have all the flooding but every house I have seen in the last 9 days needs a new roof and are now blue (from Tarps). Peoples attitudes are dropping rapidly.

thanks for your input Syrch. Pardon my ignorance but I dont know where in FL Boward county is. But I see you're from Ft. Lauderdale and if your area is that bad then I imagine a tiny island like Key West will be worse. Actually we are supposed to stay in the Sheraton in Ft. Lauderdale for one night.

Maybe I'll postpone my trip (if i can). I dont think its appropriate to be a 'tourist' amongst all this devastation.

Good luck man!

Keywest just got water..not damage. They didn't loose any power and are back up and running. The only thing about keywest that sucks is they cancelled fantasy fest until december (though i never go and don't care about it...for those that do it would suck). Fort Lauderdale is in the broward country area. Broward is the county about miami and includes hollywood, davie, plantation, sunrise, fort lauderdale, tamarac and im sure one or two that aren't coming to my head right now.

in Hollywood....it sucks. Barely any traffic lights and no power for 9 days and counting.

Mierda.

my parents got power restored in hollywood on sunday night at 8pm. my sister started school today (in north miami beach) after 1.5 weeks off. according to her school's website (a posting from last night):

Though Dade County Schools remain closed, the school will open as usual tomorrow, Wednesday, November 2, 2005. The campus is safe and clean. The cafeteria will serve a light dairy lunch. Tenth and eleventh graders will be taking the PSAT as scheduled. Please check the Message Board on the website for further details.

Please drive very carefully, as there may still be many traffic lights not working in North Miami Beach and throughout the area. If you feel you cannot bring your child to school tomorrow, rest assured that he or she will not be penalized. We look forward to seeing you tomorrow!

my mom says there are trees strewn everywhere, and all of the fences of the area are destroyed.

is key west really that bad though? i don't know; it's much farther south.

key west had some flooding but that is now gone. They had no real damage like broward. Those that know the area 595 got the worst of the eye and I can see 595 from the back window of my house. Good thing is i can see it much better now that there isn't a standing tree in the area.

thanks for the info again. I guess I should call my hotel in Key West and the Sheraton in Ft. Lauderdale to see if they will open or not. The only reason I booked the hotel in Ft. Lauderdale is because im flying in and out of Miami...and my departing flight is early in the morning. Driving straight from Key West to Miami, returning the rental car, and catching the flight back would be impossible in one morning... unless if I start driving at 3am from key west...

maybe i'm completely confused by what you're saying, but that's like living by JFK and flying out of Newark, or worse, Philly. 😛

FLL (fort lauderdale/hollywood international airport) is much closer to the sheraton in fort lauderdale than anywhere in miami.

fort lauderdale is the northernmost of the three cities.

south of fort lauderdale is miami.

south of miami is key west.

here's a map. you DON'T want to do that.

sorry I confused you. I was typing in a hurry before and didnt make much sense. What I meant was:

Im flying in to MIA (Miami) from EWR (Newark) on Nov 10th. Gonna rent a car and drive down to our hotel in Key west. Gonna stay in key west the night of 10th, 11th, and 12th. We couldve flown back from MIA on Sunday but sunday tickets are generally more $$ than Monday tickets. So we opted to buy a Monday return ticket. The only thing is that our return flight out of MIA is early in the morning (~9:00). Now I know its about a 3-4 hr drive from Key West to Miami and in order to catch our 9:00 am 11/14 flight out of Miami in time, we'd have to leave from Key west like at 4 am on Sunday night/Monday morning. With this plan we'd stay in key west the night of 10th, 11th, 12th, and 13th, fly straight to MIA from key west and catch our plane. We didnt like that idea so much. So we're staying in Key west only 3 nights (10th, 11th, 12th, checking out 13th), driving to Ft. Lauderdale over Sunday afternoon, check into hotel in Ft. Lauderdale on 13th evening, spend the night there and drive to MIA from Ft. Lauderdale Monday morning (14th). We think this is a much better plan since we wont be rushed Monday morning.

Now as to why we booked a hotel in Ft. Lauderdale as opposed to something in Miami... I have a Starwood Amex card and have some starpoints racked up. The hotels in Miami would charge me 7000+ starpoints for a free night. the one in Ft. Lauderdale charged me 3000 for one free night. So since Ft. Lauderdale is only like 20-30 miles from MIA, I opted to get a hotel in Ft. Lauderdale...
