I'm down to the last bit of my Macallan 18. I may shed a tear when it's gone :(
I'm actually going to be at 132nd for a meeting today, but have to head back home afterwards. I do still need to see Age of Ultron though...

We only got halfway through the movie last night, was funnier than I thought it would be.

I literally just took down my 4 atmos speakers yesterday so I could upgrade the fronts to a 1500w mono class D (303RMS@8ohms per channel to the hungry towers). Oddly, I think it sounds better 7.2 than it does 7.2.4.. might just be low adoption for the movies I watch.

The 18 year Highland is what I serve guests, the 30 year is for friends. ;)

So, I want to take up whiskey drinking, but really have no frame of reference on what I should be looking at. What is something good for a beginner to pick up? I'd prefer something smooth and tasty. Something I can just sip after dinner or to have a glass an relax. That is particularly hard to do with wine, as if you open a bottle, it will go bad if you don't drink the whole thing. I'd rather not drink a bottle of wine every night.

Price range I would prefer to be something around $50 a bottle. I don't have a preference on much else (age, bourbon / scotch, brand, etc), as I am a noob. I will likely be drinking it neat, or at worse, on the rocks. Just need some suggestions to take a look at, possibly try at a bar before buying a bottle.

coke.. goes good with any whiskey.
you're welcome

I'm a loyal Jack Daniels fan so I won't be much of any help to help you become inebriated. I used to sip Jack and play Grand Theft Auto. LOL

I tried some Stagg Jr. from batch #4 last night and it was incredible! If you can find it for a reasonable price it is well worth it.

If you insist on doing this, skip the whiskey and go straight for the frosting flavored vodka. I'm all for people drinking what appeals to them, but recommending someone drink Scotch mixed with 7-Up is what a high school sophomore does because they have immature tastes and they need to mask their booze with a shitload of sugar. Mixing whiskey with Mt. Dew is like ordering a Filet Mignon very well done; you're destroying a quality ingredient when you would be perfectly happy with something significantly cheaper.

I drank Jim Beam starting out because it's what my dad drank. I never cared for Jack too much. George Dickel and Southern Comfort are both sweetened and I never cared for either, though you even see people mixing those with coke. I can't handle the sugar...

I knew a bunch of guys that drank Crown Royal and Ginger Ale that swore by it... I tried it and thought it was good. I like the balance of carbonation with whiskey...so when I was 21, that was a decent drink. I wanted more whiskey flavor and Crown is just too light (as is Canadian Club)...so I tried Maker's Mark and Coke... Over the years, Maker's has been my go-to drink. I occasionally mix it with Coke or Egg Nog, but for the most part, I like it on the rocks.

I'll drink a single malt scotch with no ice (primarily to enjoy all of the subtle flavors and not to waste the $$$), but I prefer whiskey on the rocks.

I'll take a 10oz glass and fill it with ice...then pour it 3/4 of the way up. I take a few quick drinks and then let the ice mingle with it and sip it slow to enjoy it. If it gets too watered down, I just add more. :D

You're absolutely right, it should be Irn Bru but that's hard to find around here.
Some blended scotches are way overrated. I think it totally depends on the bottle. I don't mind mixing scotch with water or ice if it's not anything special. I have a few bottles that run about $5+/ounce. I'm not willing to throw money away like that....and they have a lot of Peat flavor, so that just doesn't mix well with anything. Not much can stand up to it.

I assume he is trolling, as nobody over the age of 12 actually drinks Mt. Dew.

I generally find blends underrated. People dismiss them like they're wino swill, but many are made with the same care and skill malts get. The worst you can say about a decent blend is it's predictable, as it should be if the blender knows what he's doing.

I'm in agreement with you there. Blends can be great. You can do a lot more with a blend and add depth where you see fit...make up for seasonal changes in the batch or ingredients with less waste. (same for red wine)

I was really basing my comment mostly on price. Most of the value scotches out there are blends...so I can mix them with ice or water and feel less guilt about distorting the flavor since it can be reproduced a little easier.

No, whiskey will get you drunk at pretty much any age.

Yes, whiskey will get you drunk. It's purpose, however, is not to simply "get you drunk" unless you're 12 (or have the mentality of a 12 year old, like a frat boy).

Diet Mt. Dew comes directly from the anus of Satan himself.

No, I'm pretty sure the purpose of whiskey is to get you drunk. Otherwise it's a whole lot of effort to make something that tastes so nasty. As a drug, it's a fine one when used for its intended purpose.

Satan's anus? I guess that explains the bubbles.

George Dickel isn't sweetened. It's Tennessee whiskey and their 12 yr old is IMO the best sippin' whiskey.

Surprised Blanton's wasn't brought up yet-

http://whiskey.underthelabel.com/l/464/Blanton-s-Single-Barrel-Bourbon

very well reviewed/popular bourbon for around $50- not sure how widely available it is- in Washington we don't get much of it, but it's everywhere down in Oregon (and a lot cheaper- think I paid $40ish?). Not sure if it's a sister label w/ buffalo trace, but looks affiliated w/ them. I actually just went through a bottle of that at the same time as E.H Taylor small batch-

http://whiskey.underthelabel.com/l/631/Colonel-E-H-Taylor-Jr-Small-Batch

They were close but think I preferred the EH Taylor.
