You divide $305 (in whole $ increments) into 9 bags as follows:

1, 2, 4, 8, 16, ... , 128, 50.

The first 8 bags contain a total of $255 as per the following series:

20, 21, 22, 23, 24, ... , 27.

Doh, I started the answer correctly, but messed it up early with a 3 instead of 4. That threw the remainder of my answer off, but at least I got the number of bags correct.

Well either way...you got the number of bags correct. The question wanted to know easily the amount in each bag. So if they were incremented properly in that series, it would be easier for a user to pick out the bags...but good answer nonetheless
