And HAL, in all honesty there is a slim chance that I could defend myself against an attacker without a gun, but it would still have to culminate in my killing him because for a woman 5'3" to attempt to merely render an attacker helpless is incredibly stupid.

It's not a huge issue, in the UK so few people have guns why worry about it, it's like saying "How would you propose to defend yourself against a tank?" Who cares? It's not going to happen statistically.

Being attacked by a man with a gun IS a valid concern. Regardless of what country you live in, and how much of a liberal utopia it is. People in Britain have guns and use them to do bad things against helpless people.

And AFAIK you're not allowed to carry ANY weapon in the UK that's capable of being used for self defense. So you don't have the capability to defend yourself.
