I know I'm rolling the dice asking about this, but hey, everything else gets asked on ATOT.

I just bought this desk: Desk
and I want to paint the room I'm going to put it in. However, I have no idea what to paint it.

The room is already white with white baseboards, door trim, and closet doors. I prefer cool colors, don't like oranges or yellows, and am kinda meh about greens (I'm realizing that the fact I'm mentioning greens shows how clueless I am.) I would like to keep the trim white unless painting it will make the room look incredible. (Example: I was going to paint the room a dark bluish-gray and redo the trim in black, until I bought the desk and realized the colors would clash with the beige carpet - not feeling like redoing the carpet right now.)

I've already received the advice "paint the desk," so I don't need to see that. It's a consideration, but I was going to paint the room anyway.

I just want a color that the desk will work with, and won't look too traditional.

Thanks!

I will tell you one thing... paint the largest wall at different color than the other 3. Accent wall and it looks cool.

I personally painted my office an off-white with a gray (looks like wet concrete) accent wall.

Totally masculine and easy to do.

But, there are a few members of "teh gay gang" who frequent here, and according to Bravo TV, all gays are qualified as interior decorators... I'm sure you'll get lots of help... ;)

Heh...many of us are far more helpless in decorating than most people would think.

The key is to find someone who is good at this sort of thing and leech off them for advice.

How big is the room? What other furniture do you have in there?

Your best bet is to take something from that room (a pillow, a painting/poster, a seat cushion, etc.) and pick your colors based on that.

Which way does that room face? Does it get a lot of sun? Or no. Do you want a lot of light? Color can play a major roll in the room. Take your color preferences and go from there. Need more info on what YOU like.

Olive can be dark, again, if that room doesn't get a lot of light, Olive will make the room seem even darker. Sage green, slightly lighter in color from the Olive, dark beige, white trim. Use two tone colors for the walls, and trim. Tone on tone. Flip flop the colors. Even blue, a nice blue.

Is this room just an office?

Some hue of blue on the wall with the desk and the other three in a gray/silver. Keep the trim white.

Let's have a support group for women and gay men who can't decorate! We'll have it in the same building where they have support groups for hetero men who can't fix things and ATOTers who can't get laid. Oh wait... ;)

The room is approximately 10' x 8'...I'd say, give or take a few square feet. In the room will be the desk, a bookshelf (about 30" wide, same finish), and my elliptical machine (smaller than what you see at the gym). I may have other small items added that match the desk - a short bookshelf, and maybe a stand/file drawer. To answer LookingGlass' questions - It has one window looking north. I'm not much concerned about light, I use the room mostly in the early morning or the evening. I tend to like darker colors, and darker rooms, but I don't want to be a cave dweller either.

I don't have any particular items in my room to base colors off of...except the light blue rugs my elliptical machine is sitting on, I suppose.

I really like the ideas of painting the walls different colors. I'm leaning towards gray for the wall the desk will be against, and the opposite wall, where my elliptical machine is (typical black/gray home gym equipment). These are also the larger walls in the room. Right now, I'm thinking of red for the other walls (where the window and the doors are set), but the olive also sounds appealing. I'd love to do some shade of blue, but I'm afraid it would clash with the warm/reddish tones of the desk.

But anyway, I have some great ideas now! Thanks ATOT, you really came through for me (and with a minimal amount of personal humiliation :p )!
