ATOT Photo buffs! I need to replace my digital camera. Suggestions?

I have to replace my digital camera. Its a 2 yr old fuji finepix (2600).

I also use a SLR to take real photos. The SLR is also old, so I am wondering if maybe I should consider spending more and getting something that would replace both the fuji, and my SLR.

I would consider myself a beginner - intermediate photographer. My wife is a beginner. She has no idea how to use my SLR.

anyone want to throw out their two cents?

My budget was originally around $300, but if there was a good value SLR digital camera then I would consider spending more. BUT my wife would also need to be able to use it.

Please keep your suggestions at or below $600....is this even possible?

Thanks in advance.

If a DSLR, then the Canon Digital Rebel. Can be had for, something like $650 after rebates.

If a point and shoot, Canon A95 for around $350.

Interested in a D1? I'lll sell you a Nikon D1 with a Speed Flash, Nikor 28-120 AF lens, and a 70-220 Tamron lens, plus the bag, polarizer for the 70-220, spare batteries and flash card reader for $800.

thanks Shotgun and Pyonir, I will look into those cameras.

Beau, for that much money I would have to be able to print high quality photos. I assume the D1 could do that, but what kind of printer would I need (i.e., how much would I have to spend on that.)?

Exactly...and you wife could use the DRebel, because its "auto" abilities are easily usable by the casual user.

You can do some pretty-good-quality prints with any new HP or Canon printers with their photo paper/print settings, which can be had for under $200.

And while the D1 is decent, it's not any higher quality (as far as MP goes) than what you have now. You're really paying for the features and SLR, and the lenses (which are swappable with any F-Body nikon)

1. What kind of image quality are you looking for?
2. How often are you going to take picture?
3. Are you willing to learn more about photography?
4. Do you care what bling bling your friends have?

It is very likely that the old SLR optic/s is superior than the point-n-shoot digital, and most people 4x6 prints are the norm with the occasional 8x10. Canon A75 is more than adequate point-n-shoot for the average person, because the optics is sharp (same optic as the A85/A95), however the pixel (dick size) is lower than the A85/A95.

IMHO, stay with your current cameras for a few more years, because they are good enough for the occasional photo. And, save the money for better camera/technology and price drop. If you must have a new camera then a Canon point-n-shoot A series will tie you over till something newer/better/cheaper come out.
