I still want to do a Proxmox cluster at some point too, my ESXi box was suppose to be temporary and that was probably like 10 years ago and it's still chugging along. Proxmox would be nice as you can do all the fancy stuff that paid ESXi can do, and you can also manage it from Linux. For my current setup I need to run a Windows VM just so I can get to my VM server.

I bought my setups prepandemic but eventually they'll need a refresh.

The ones I know of, memoryexpress.com, pc-canada.com, canada-computers.com. They don't have as much selection though and it seems half the stuff is always out of stock.

I think micro centers is a US thing, although I wish we had something like that here that we could order from. I would never expect a B&M computer store here but even just a big place to order from would be great. Newegg was decent too before it got bought out by the CCP even though it was US based they did have a Canadian site. They had the best selection for Supermicro stuff.
 
So this is interesting, I felt something was not right with how fast the voltage drops on the test batteries I bought so decided to push them more. 4x 7.2ah batteries should give me 345wh, or 172wh usable (never want to actually fully discharge lead acid batteries). But as soon as I pull the plug, with just a light bulb running at 48v it drops below 48v within a minute.

Decided to let it go to see how fast it drops further. Well turns out, it stabilizes at around 47.37v.

Mind you this is a 120v 150w bulb running at 48v, so it's only like a 40w load. According to my calculations it should run for 3 hours but I highly doubt that. But it's still reassuring that it's not just dropping fast like I thought it would. Amp hour rating of batteries is based on a 20hr rate so when talking with small batteries like this you're only really getting that rating on a very small load.

I might actually look at getting an inverter soon since I'll technically have a fully working dual conversion UPS at this point. I'll plug the workstations into the inverter and if I get 5-10 minute run time out of this I'll be happy for now, until I get the proper batteries. Will be a good test before this goes live for real.
 
Just realized the voltage drop has to do with fact that I'm using crocodile clips lol. At the batteries directly I'm getting 48.3v while rectifier is getting 47.12.

This makes so much more sense now. When this is actually wired properly with proper gauge wire it won't be an issue and I can actually see being able to get way more run time now even with these little batteries.

Almost on the 1 hour mark now, sitting at 47.08v.

I work early tomorrow so think I need to call this done but I am curious to do a longer test tomorrow.

I still need to figure out the alarm pin out then I'm ready to rack this I think. Next pay cheque think I'll buy some #2 cables and start running everything proper.
