VHS was the best honestly. You can record stuff, have it on media that you control and it was simple. With PVRs it's just a black box that you don't have much control of. My dad likes to record stuff so I set him up with a HDMI capture setup where he can essentially capture whatever is on the TV to a USB stick, but it's technically still a step behind what VHS could do, as you could record something while watching something else. He still uses the PVR but when it's full he'll play stuff back and then capture it to the USB stick.
 
Going thru the latest New Scientist and there's a short story about the green comet. Then there's this little gem.

I could just get a timer socket for the lights, but what is the fun in that.
