F*ck the cloud. Seriously.

I might technically be a friggin' millenial, but if I don't have a copy on a HDD I own or on optical media sitting on a shelf,
I don't have _real_ access to it.

Besides, storage ain't as expensive as it once was.

Pretty much my thought too. I want whatever it is I'm doing to be local and in my control. Whether it's watching a movie, or coding, or pretty much anything.

Essentially if my internet goes down I can continue to function pretty much normally. I may use the internet a lot as far as information goes like googling stuff, but even then, I tend to hoard ebooks and other info locally. I may not really refer to it but it's there. If my internet went down for a week, I could probably manage fine and have enough to do with what I have locally, as far as productivity related stuff, or entertainment related stuff.

One thing I have been wanting to work more towards is better organization of information though. Like when I need to know the syntax of a Linux command I tend to google it each time. Even stuff like that, I'd prefer to store on one of my servers. Probably do some kind of Wiki or something. I do have my own hosted password manager and other web apps like that though.

Dude. You bought 32 He8's. That's a shitload of cash.

True, but compared to what you got back in the day, it's not bad at all :)
Besides, you can get what is essentially a He8 (just a 5400rpm version) for ~$180 by shucking WD 8TB externals.
Incredible. Saw the P183 in the other photo. Do you have all those drives in a RAID array or JBOD? I saw your screen cap. How much of that 128TB of storage are you using? What else besides Anime and J-Pop do you have? So, you have one 128TB server in Dallas and another 128TB backup in Iowa. Is that just a copy or do you do regular backups to the Iowa server?
JBOD for ease of upgrading (I didn't drop in all He8s in one shot - gradually phased out older 2TB, 3TB and 4TB drives).
Won't openly discuss what I have, but suffice to say the servers are only ~60% full atm.

Yeah, but you didn't do that. Not to mention there goes your warranty. I'd rather have the 5-year warranty. Been looking the He10 drives.

The He10s look real purrrty, but real spendy though :(
While I don't exactly advocate the warranty shenanigans, as long as you keep the shucked case,
you should be able to dump the drive back in and RMA it if it does go FUBAR
(being a HGST drive though, seems unlikely other than infant mortality or improper transport)

Wow are they at 10TB now as far as non SMR drives go? My biggest drive is 4TB. Basically I have 4x3TB in raid 10, 8x 1TB in raid 5 and 8x2TB in raid 10.

The raid 5 is strictly backups/archive so redundancy is less important. That was my first array. It's dated at Sat Sep 20 02:15:28 2008. It started off with 3 drives and I just kept adding more as required. Recently had one fail, which reminds me I should maybe consider buying a spare. I had one on hand but now I used it.

Could do well replacing those drives with like 8TB ones though. Imagine the rebuild time on that. :p I do mostly raid 10 now days though so I don't see myself upgrading that array, though I may stick to raid 5 or 6 where speed is less important. On my old server I had performance issues where if IO would take too long stuff would actually start to hang and crash but that issue seems to be gone.

I kinda want to look at ZFS at some point too. Currently this is a NAS style environment but it's crossed my mind to move towards a SAN environment, I just need to figure out the best way to do iSCSI accros multiple VM servers if I did decide to add more. I know ESXi paid version can do it but I want to stick to free. Currently have ESXi free but that was just till I figure out how to get KVM/Qemu to work how I want. It's complex to setup once you get into vlans and such while ESX is turn key.

Yessir, 10TB on good old PMR.
F*ck the cloud, and f*ck SMR :p

Still waiting for you to answer my reply.

When I rebuilt my file server in 2013. I had to move to a whole new platform. It only needed to serve up files so I got the lowest clocked AMD APU at the time, the A4-3300. I paired it with a crappy Foxconn motherboard. It was cheap and had a lot of PCI slots, which allowed to reuse my pair of Rosewell SATA2 PCI controller cards. I use a Samsung 840 120GB as the boot drive. The A4-3300 is slow and unresponsive. However, usage of an SSD as a boot drive makes the access of drives on the network quite snappy. I power it all with a Seasonic S12-II 450W, which replaced a first version S12 that bit the dust just after five years of 24/7 duty. All this is housed in my first P180. I bought that originally for my first A64 build, a Winchester model that broke the 2Ghz barrier!

File Server Storage:
3 x HGST 4TB
1 x Seasonic 4TB
2 x Seasonic 1.5TB
1 x Samsung 2TB
1 x WD Green 2TB

Went out to an Amazon locker to grab a delivery, and changing lightbulbs like a mofo right now
(mass converting to LEDs from a mix of halogens and CCFLs)
