I'm possibly about to blow several grand in the name of energy efficiency.

Waiting for a call back, getting an estimate for a new water heater. I'm guessing it will be close to 2 grand for the install, and probably close to a grand to cancel the rental contract. Need to bite the bullet and just do it, going to save in the long run I suppose. The rental is a low efficiency one, if I was to get a more efficient one through them they'd just charge more per month.

Not really sure what the efficiency of the existing tank is, but assuming it's like 50% and if I account for the monthly rental payment it's probably several years. Also have to account for less air being sucked through a chimney so I save there too. Though considering all the price increases and carbon tax and crap being implemented it might just turn out to be even in the end. But may as well do something now than to wait. Going to save several hundred per year simply by getting rid of the rental contract alone, too. So no matter what I know I will be saving money. The actual amount is kind of hard to really calculate.

Hydro would be a better place to look at saving, but given it's the delivery fee that is the biggest part of the bill, the only real way to save would be to go off grid. Something I do want to look into at some point.
