pardon the obvious, why doesn't Bezo's project get as much press, given that he's already achieved this objective?

or is the difference water landing vs non-water landing?

There is a HUGE difference between water and non-water.

Water is much more difficult because of the moving of the drone ship and the unpredictable nature of the waves. It is also a much smaller target than you can have on land. Also, remember, MOST of our planet is covered in water, when making a landing such as this it requires a good bit of fuel, the less fuel you have to use on landing, the more fuel you can use for your cargo (to get either more cargo in orbit, or less cargo on a further orbit). Being able to land anywhere there is water opens up a LOT more opportunities for missions as the fuel requirements to land safely are no longer requiring a trip all the way back to the mainland.

Basically this will allow spaceX to offer larger cargo capacity and more options for different types of orbits, as well as make other launch sites more economically feasible.
