Had a cheaper Panasonic quad around that time. The went Kenwood later for awhile.

trying to get away without replacing the main filter caps but they are ~40 years old so I doubt I will get away with it

maybe, would take a long time to search through equipment to find the right values, though I'm sure that stuff is a gold mine for spare parts. When I priced the caps on digikey it was going to be about $50-60 for all the big caps, but I am going to do the rest of the unit and power supply first and see how it works afterwards, then do the big caps if necessaryCheck army surplus.
