i have my doubts whether K712's would be better enough to bother upgrading from K702's

if you have K702s the K712s wouldnt really be a decent enough upgrade, the K812s might be though.


i probably should get a headphone amp instead of just driving them off of my receiver
you really should, the K702s have a 62ohm impedance, most devices like phones or computers are built for much lower powered headphones (16-32ohms) so getting a decent amp would certainly help.

I would imagine his receiver has headphone amp built in.

Yeah, but it depends on the receiver what kind of power it's ouputting, some of the cheaper ones will only power 16ohm ear buds, others will have the ability to power full 600ohm headphones, just depends.
