Hey squirrel in the butt-

What OS do I want for a home server? I have DreamSpark premium so I don't have to worry about price. Or do I want Linux?

Also..can I make a section for lil rudeguy and a section for me and a joint section? I really don't want to see his porn collection.

Also...can I nef from that computer? What about run a game like Battlefield (the original)

Thanks!

I'm a fan of CentOS, though Debian is good too. Try both see which you like best. I've actually been considering going more towards Debian as CentOS packages tend to be out of date and you have to jump through hoops if something requires a newer version.

You could setup NFS shares, one for him and one for you and keep them separate. Setup a user account for yourself and one for him. Actually Samba is better if your main computer is Windows. You can setup separate logins on the Windows box, and have it map the appropriate share depending on who logs in, by using a login script. Lookup Samba domain controller.

I like to use mdadm raid for the storage. I personally would not use a server as a workstation, it's best for it to be tucked somewhere on a good UPS in a place it can't be accidentally shut down or w/e. You could run VMs on it too and run game servers. Unfortunately most game servers seem to be native to windows and Linux is an afterthought, usually easier to just run it in Windows.

Unfortunately the downside of Linux is none of this stuff is turn key so if you have no experience it's not something you can just setup in a night. Takes lots of reading. One of these days I'd like to make a distro where this stuff is more turn key. Basically a web interface where you can setup everything.

Wow, would be freaking awesome to get a blade chassis with all the blades.

I was looking at ebay for fun and they actually arn't THAT expensive (couple grand) but people charge ridiculous for shipping. I don't care how good of a deal I'm getting, I don't want to pay $900 for shipping. That's non refundable, if something were to go wrong where I need to be refunded. I don't care how heavy it is, there is no freaking way it cost that much to ship. I could see $100 maybe.
