Most of our busy roads are divided. They put in "Michigan Turns" to keep traffic moving. It works well.
They took one street from a standard 2 lanes each way plus a left turn lane and made it divided with Michigan turns. Traffic flows awesome now and the speed limit went from 30 to 45.
