I think he is just plugging in a generic salary ($50K) to compare various cost of livings around the country.
This is why I love Indy -- it is so freaking cheap to live here and the city is nice and clean. Sure, I don't have oceans or mountains nearby, but with the money I save by living here, I can go visit them often and still bank extra money.
So, at our NYE party this weekend, we had a guest from Boston (the MIT professor I mentioned in an earlier post). We were talking about real estate prices and he was really impressed with my house and the real estate prices in my area compared to Boston.
There you go. Now compare a salary in San Fran to what you'd need in Indy.

Real estate prices in this area are awful. Then we get shitty weather, abominable traffic, and the list goes on.
