Listening to Storytime on repeat, it's starting to sound a little better, but I still hold my opinion that the singer destroys the song.

I read some comments by a friend of mine with a real gift for music, and he's generally right - the lyrics and music are a throwback to older Nightwish. The trouble is that the singer is just fucking awful.

Okay, maybe she's not totally awful, but she's just mediocre. Let's take an NFL metaphor. Nightwish before had Peyton Manning. Now they're using Jay Cutler.

Jukka is still fucking owning the drumset, and in full dress clothes, it's pretty neat. Usually he wears a wife beater and a bandanna.

And the keyboard is still its usual brilliance, although the tune doesn't match the prop. The prop is a baby grand, the tones are pure electric, meaning it was actually done on Tuomas' usual Yamaha or Korg equipment.

Anette does fine with a techno/industrial type, but she can't do an fantasy metal or operatic metal band.

The best replacement they could've gotten for Tarja would've been Nicole Bogner, but she wouldn't have left VOA for Nightwish, she left metal for pure opera instead.

I just noticed Anette has a moment where she almost pulls out an operatic voice, a la Tarja, for a half line. It's a richness and depth to the song that has been missing from Nightwish for four years.
