Going to start dismantling my PC setup soon so I can redo all the cabling and setup the new 4k monitors. I've been exited to try them out, yet dreading redoing all the cabling, but it has to get done. Probably easier to pull everything out and redo from scratch so I can label them ahead of time before I put them back in.

label the cables on the table

That's the plan. It's what I did the first time but they all fell off, so going to use electrical tape AND label maker labels this time. I got a tape that is "for harsh environments" so maybe those labels will stick better than the normal ones too.

About to start that now.

Sounds like your table isn't very level. :)

Not sure what that has to do with a table. It's the adhesive that just came off after a while. Hoping these labels I put will do better.

So this took way longer than I thought, was quite the undertaking, but I'm essentially at a point where the KVM is upstairs now, and all the cabling is somewhat cleaner and labeled so I know what's what. Also got rid of the DVI cables, that was most of the bulk actually. I will have to find a use for those, I don't remember how much I paid but they were probably not cheap...

I didn't even get a chance to touch my new monitors or my work machine yet, will do that tomorrow. Going to try to get up early, as for sure I need to at least have the work machine setup by end of day.

So my work from home setup is mostly all done. Tested VPN and soft phone, all good!

Funny thing is the new 4k monitors I bought aren't usable for my personal stuff in this configuration so they'll be strictly for work purposes for the time being. What happens is my KVM setup is all HDMI based but the PCs we have are display port. I used a DP to HDMI adapter but I guess the adapters don't support 4k so I was not getting a 4k signal. Good news is my KVM setup DOES work with 4k for my Linux and my gaming machine, I was a bit worried it wouldn't. Some HDMI cables arn't rated for 4k and I was not sure if mine were or not, or that the output from the PC was, but turns out it all works. I do wonder if the rating is a bit of a "guarantee" thing though, kinda like how cat6 is rated for gig, but cat5e will still do it.

Will post pics later I still need to do a few more things such as setup a side monitor on the Raspberry Pi for movies and TV shows. I have some speakers on the way as it's just easier to have a separate set than to try to tie in to the existing ones. I already have two PCs tied in and that happens in the basement.

As promised pics of my setup.

New monitors ready to be unboxed:

Before:

(bottom of rack where PCs are)

After:

Basically main thing that changed is the KVM got moved from downstairs to upstairs, along with cleaning up cables a bit, which involved taking everything out and starting it from scratch.

Also have my work PC setup with all of this. For now, the two new 4k monitors (sides) will be dedicated to work. I was going to use one as my main so I can enjoy it on my personal machine too but the work PC uses display port and the KVM is HDMI and the adapters did not handle 4k. But the main thing, when I tested the 4k on the KVM, it worked for both my Linux machine and my gaming machine. I was a tad worried that for a reason or the other it would not work. Like incompatible cable or something like that. But thankfully it's not the case.

Made a video of the process of dismantling and rebuilding everything, will probably edit that tomorrow.

Cabling is not super good, but my main goal was to take it off the ground and remove unused cables such as the 5x 25 footer DVI ones, which were super bulky. I don't want any cables touching the ground. Makes it easier to vacuum, and if I drop something it's actually obtainable instead of vanishing into the nether.
