you will need a butane torch lighter, I use a jewelers torch. There are E-nails available which you plug into a wall socket and set your temp digitally, but those are fairly pricey.

You need to be inside, doing a dab outdoors is a bitch, you lose so much.

it's actually fairly effortless in a well designed bong, it's much easier than it looks.

is it aided by the intense heat on the metal plate or something

how hot do you have to get that metal plate for the most effecient burning of the dab

Eh, it depends, if you aren't smoking often then probably not worth it. If you are a daily smoker though it can be pretty useful, 0.1g for a solid 4-5 hour high.

It will hit VERY hard for someone who is not a daily smoker though.

Most people will never do it because of the required effort in making BHO, the extraction while easy enough is a somewhat delicate process using butane (a very flammable substance), and you also need about an ounce of bud to make just a few grams of wax/oil.

So for 90% of smokers there isn't a need for it.
