Hes going first.

Either San Deigo drafts him, or they trade down, for money/player(s)/high draft pick(s).

I pick myself to play all positions and I will pay myself $40 million over the next 2 years to do it.

San Diego needs a defense before they need another QB.

I think they should trade down. They don't need a QB right now.

they actually don't have that much invested in Brees - he was their 2nd pick that year, and I don't think they have a lot of confidence in him...what they need are some people to throw the ball to! They should trade down and take Roy Williams, and pick up some defensive help in trading down....their secondary should be ok, need some LB's!

Yea they're still reeling from that Ryan Leaf pick. They'll screw themselves if they give up on Brees by drafting manning.

I still think they need to go for Manning. He's a potential franchise QB, and Brees continues to disappoint.

In real life, I believe Marty will trade down. Marty does not draft QB's, and he does not develop them well. In his years at Kansas City, we never had a great QB (save Joe Montana). I don't see trading down working in this mock draft however, but Eli Manning or Larry Fitzgerald seem to be the obvious choices for the first pick.

Brees was picked in the 2nd round and they have not mortgaged their future on him. The defense took some big steps the second half of the season. Having the #1 pick affords you the opportunity to make a significant change to some part of your team. I believe they have to go with Manning. A proven college QB who has the proven pedigree to make it in the next level. I dont see how much they can change on defense by trading down.

Before SD takes another QB, they need someone to throw the ball too. Of course, before that they need a defense.

I believe inconsistent play by Brees was their killer this year. Their defense left alot to be desired, too, but I think they can address most of their defensive needs in the later rounds and free agency. They could use a safety for one, and a CB...and an improvement in their front four. Marty is a defensive minded coach, so I see them picking up a few guys in FA. As far as WR's, I think they are near set with this. David Boston will settle down and start producing (as he started to in the end of the season), and LT is a huge receiving threat. Still, i'd go with either Manning or Fitzgerald in this draft. In real life, i'd trade down.

They will be fine at wide out. They will be fine in the secondary now that they have another year under their belts. Wade Philips was a big signing. They need a leader and Manning is it. I like Brees but he doesnt have all the tools of a big time QB. He can play in the NFL but he isnt the Chargers answer.

I hope so too, although I doubt. I think the Giants will end up picking one of the three: Sean Taylor, Robert Gallery or WIlliam Uedeze.

1. Eli Manning - ANother team from Chargers
2. Larry Fitzerald - Raiders
3. Ben R. - Cardinals
4. Uedeze - Giants

Let's also hope that they don't bail and go to LA.

Doubt it.

Aren't they suing the City of San Diego to get out of their lease?

It doesn't look like it will succeed, though.

Given that we cannot trade down here, is it pretty much the concensus that Manning is the choice?

I think San Diego should trade down. I have several reasons for that. First, QB's are not as important to winning as they used to be. I like Jake Delhomme, but he is not a superstar. Neither was Quincy Carter, and Dallas got into the playoffs after 3 straight 5-11 seasons. I think coaches have more impact right now than any individual position, and I think you can win with an above average QB. In Brees' case, he hasn't had time to develop. San Diego cannot allow themselves to be worried about past mistakes, in business this is known as sunk costs. Just give him a couple more years to see if he develops. San Diego has the same problem Dallas does on offense. They need more playmakers around their QB and Tomlinson. They could use a pair of good young WR's, and their offensive line is marginal. Upgrade those and see if Brees develops at all. That way you know for sure. And since SD has so many needs, trading to say the number 10 spot in the first round would likely net them an extra 2nd and 3rd round pick, which would help fill out their team more quickly. If they were just a player or two away, then I would say pick your number one guy, but SD isn't close to being an SB contender, imo.
