IIRC, there used to be some pretty spirited discussions on the old IRC/MSN chatrooms. Do we have anything similar? Or have folks resorted to going outside?

Edit:

So I created a Slack for us, PM me your email address for an invite, then I'll just give new people invite permissions and let it go like that.

Are dongs provided or BYOD?

BYOD preferred but extra dongs will be on hand just in case.

Dude you always crack me up, miss the good 'ole Vent days.

You, upsciLLion, Nik, ActuaryTm, ChuckyWang, Sheepathon, Hyperblaze, Staples, me and others. Good times and great memories.

I've heard about Slack but haven't used it.

For our community how does it differ from say IRC or a group gmail chat/hangouts session? What are the benefits?

It has ups and downs. You can build custom teams with all kinds of different administration options and granular roles. Lots of customizations for notifications and what not. It has more straight forward connectivity options to integrate social media, RSS and lots of other useful plugins, has TLS by default, a web interface and mobile clients that integrate seamlessly and tons of other modern creature comforts. The downside is that it's "free" but not in the same way as IRC. If slack goes tits up, or changes their pricing model (lots of stuff in free version tbh) the entire community would go with it. There's no way to spin up your own version outside of their control. For stuff like this, that's a totally acceptable risk.. but for OSS projects it can be painful here.

I use slack and IRC a lot, I consider them to both to be good, just different things in the end.

as safe as running anything else on Android ;)
the app itself runs fine, I use it here and there.

we'll see if this takes off or not, I am betting there will be little interest here, maybe the OP can edit and add my message. prove me wrong ATOT!

I can see minimal interest with a small cluster of people maybe 12-20?

Interested but kind of not want to install another app. Does Slack have a desktop app? (obviously haven't googled).

If only it had been on Telegram where most of my junk chats are already these days :D

How many dongs do there need to be before we've entered "extra dongs" territory? Like, what's the base dong quotient?

We used to have #neochat on Undernet. It eventually died due to apparent lack of interest. I miss some of the people I used to chat with there.
