Do you think with all the threads poping up all of the time asking for stock advice that we should just start one here in OT?

Please take a vote 🙂

I thought we could try to get this thread a sticky so that people can just come here and get any sort of trading/investing advice they need instead of starting a new thread.

Sounds like a great idea....wait....hasn't this been done eleventy-billion times?

I think people would have better luck getting advice on forums dedicated to investing. I also think AT wouldn't want any legal issues with stock advice/tips being given on their public forums.

This is true, just thought it might help people and put an end to the several threads that start on this topic weekly, what sites are dedicated to this sort of thing? Do any of them have forums?

I agree. ATOT is a great forum for aggregated thoughts, but if you really want specialized knowledge in any area it's best to seek forums for that purpose.

The problem with stock forums is that it's full of quacks. Yahoo is a great example of how bad an investment forum can be. Forbes is another. Morning Star actually has some people with a solid understanding. Elite Trader is probably the best overall forum, but it's more dedicated to traders than investors.

Sorry, too lazy for linking right now.

Just start a separate website. I'll even offer to host it, sounds like a pretty decent idea.

EDIT: (specifically to mods) Of course keeping something like this at anandtech would be great idea. But if they don't agree to it there are other options. This isn't meant to be an advertisement or request or anything like that.

A crude place to start would be Yahoo Groups. When I start my TeleChart subscription up again I'll be using their forums at worden.com. A lot of online brokerages also have forums.

Much better sites out there.

Unless someone has insider info, I'm not interested. 😛

True... things to stay away from "buy xxxx! it's going double!" ... and other claims with no evidence or support or reasoning. I haven't found any open forums that are any more than people pimping their latest idea, which they have no actual money invested in.

What if OT did start an investing club? How do you propose it would work?

If you're thinking of another AT-spinoff forum it will die eventually, don't do it.

No, more like a sticky for this thread where people can go and get stock/investing info instead of starting new threads, where intelligent people who know things about stocks can share some info.

It would help a lot of people out so they can gain some first hand knowledge, I know that a lot of people say "check out this site" thats great, they have been a lot of help. But it really helps to get some first hand info, and get some help from the friendly people of OT.

I'm sure that if you took the initiative and started such a thread it could be a huge success. It would have to be a treasure chest of information with links, questions, resources, etc. If it's a benefit to the community I'm sure the Mods would consider a sticky.

I would be interested and here are some topics I'd like to see covered:
1) Why CU's are better than corporate banks unless you value 24/7 convenience then corporate banks usually win.
2) Online banks like INGDirect and HSBC. Are they legit (yes)? How can they offer such great rates (less overhead)? Which has the best incentives?
3) Saving and investing for your childs future.
4) CD's
5) Why you should always pay online using your credit card vs debit card.
6) Roth IRA vs regular IRA
7) Best investments for casual investor ($100/mo), something safe that yields about 5-6% interest.

Ok those are actually general personal finance topics rather than investing. Oh well.

Good luck 🙂

Well it would be really hard for me to start the thread with a lot of info becuase I am also looking for the information, I need to round up some AT members that know stocks.

lol that long list and I totally forgot to mention stocks, it's been a long week and hard Friday for me 🙂

Stocks aren't the only form of investing though. 🙂 I guess I'd post in the thread if one existed, but it would take a lot to sort through all the BS. "Investing" is such a broad term... it would require it's own forum because of all the different topics... technical analysis, fundamentals, basics, markets, brokerages, risk management, portfolios, etc.

Yea, thats the problem, I don't think that we should start a stock section on a tech site, that and it would take a new mod for the section. But I hope to gather enough people with insight to get something going.

I could host a little forum for it. No guarantees on it staying up though. I had a forum once before and never used it. Ended up deleting it cause it seemed to generate useless hits that would suck up some of my bandwidth.
