ATOT: I need some advice

I know this will probably get me nowhere, but ATOT has sometimes given good advice

Currently, I'm half-way through my 2nd year at McMaster University for a B.A. in history. I fvcked this term right up, and my GPA is gonna be like a 4.0 (out of 12).

I also have a job as a Product Expert (Comission based salesman) at Future Shop, a canadian version of Best Buy. I make some good money

I made some bad decisions in the past regarding credit cards and lines of credit, and have myself more than ten thousand in the hole.

I'm thinking I should take a year off of school, sort out my priorities, and get some money to get myself out of debt.

What does ATOT think?

4 / 12? So in normal university terms, you have like a 1.33 GPA. You're FSCKED unless you can bring up those grades. Take a part-time class load with EASY courses, see if you can get some of those worse grades replaced, and don't worry too much about the debts so long as you can keep your head above water. Finishing college comes first

Damn..you should kick yourself in the ass for not thinking twice on using those bastards. In any case...ask for an educational leave and solve your problems first !

YEa I would say sit down with yourself and come up with some ways to earn money. After a long discussion organize a future stratogey of how you will got to school, earn money for a living and pay-off dept at the same time.

Compromise. Do the work, pay off the debt, live a little. Also take one class and throw yourself into it, do all the extra credit, prepare, etc, get your best grade.

And cut up the credit cards.

See if you can retake any of the classes you bombed in and replace the old grades with the new ones. Do well and your GPA will shoot right back up.

Agreed.

Agreed, but that solves nothing in the short/medium run. And be sure that you have to take care of that CC debt NOW! If you let it fester, you may find it impossible to climb out of.

My advice: First off, cancel ALL your credit cards. If you're not paying CC's off in full every month, you shouldn't have them. Then dump as much of your disposable income into paying off that debt (but make sure you have enough in savings in case of emergency). Work overtime, work a second job. Sorry, "having a life" has to be put on hold for a while. Sit down and figure out your monthly expenses. I'm not kidding. Actually sit down with a pen and paper, and consider everything from food to birthday presents (round costs up when estimating!). Determine how long it will take, making the money you do after taxes, to pay off all your debt. Can you manage to pay it off within a year? If so, then taking a break from school might be an option. If it'll take longer than a year, you'll have to recalculate how long it will take to pay off the debt while taking part time classes. Whatever solution you come up with, you have to stick to it!

I consider education to be extremely important, but it serves you no purpose whatsoever if you're failing classes. Address the other issues first, then focus on school. On a side note, and I don't mean this to be insulting, but what do you plan to do with a BA in History? I've seen many people who go to college for the sake of getting a degree. Any degree. Yeah, many companies only care to see a university under your name, but that's a waste of time and money if you ask me (unless you have a genuine interest and think you can use it in the future). If you're paying for it, make sure you're getting something valuable out of it.

I'd finish school. I know more people that dropped out for a term only to never return than the other way around.
