i'm looking for something that can hold atleast 5 rounds, has a scope, and has little recoil

i shot a 30/30 and it was cool, but the recoil was a bit much. anything similar?

Keep in mind how much bullets will cost. I love a .22 because you can shoot for hours with $10 worth of bullets. And they're dirt cheap.

But if you want to kill something with it, it better be smaller than a person.

Yeah, what exactly do you need it for. If 30/30 had to much recoil for you, then you need either a .22lr if its just for plinking, or maybe a .223.

Looking for bolt action or could it be semi?

any advantages of a bolt action over a semi or vice versa?

A .22 bolt action would have the advantage of being cheap, and having cheap bullets.

Yeah, I'd advise to start with a .22lr. It may seem like a bb gun, but you can learn the basic fundamentals with it. Look at getting a ruger 10/22. Thats your best bet. Then, once you're looking for a bigger round, theres a million options.

imho for plinking it's hard to get more bang for your buck than a .22 unless you want to destroy things, then i suggest an m60.

I assume a bolt action would have a bit more power because it's not using part of the energy from the bullet to eject the casing.

Edit: From Wikipedia:
However, the bolt-action is still common among sniper rifles, as snipers value the design's potential for superior accuracy, reliability, lesser weight, and the ability to control loading over the faster rate of fire that alternatives allow.

All .22's are dirt cheap, take your pick.

You might also consider .17 HMR, it's a fun little round. Not nearly as cheap as .22LR but certainly not in the realm of centerfire rifle cartridges.

Nothing wrong with BB guns. Also, it'll let him get used to the gun, and if he destroys it with poor maitinence, at least he'll learn his lesson for cheap.

Eh, .17 really is more like Airsoft at that point.
