ATOT HT gurus...help me out here

I know only a handful of the many electronics producing companies make the actual LCD panels and sell them to the rest of the companies. I also understand that the company that makes the LCDs tend to keep the best ones for themselves and sell the crappier ones to the other companies. That would mean that if I buy an LCD tv made by one of those companies that make the actual LCD panel, I'd probably be buying a better product. Is this correct? Which are those companies?

asking because gf's parents think sony is the best, but I think there might be better and cheaper alternatives out there for an LCD tv other than Sony.

Well if you want an LCD Projection TV (and not an LCD flat panel), I don't think you can do much better than the Sony A10 series. None of the others I looked at where anywhere near as nice.

Disclaimer: Yes, I ended up buying a Sony 50A10

care to explain the difference between LCD projection and LCD flat panel? Im not upto date with all the terms...

LCD flat panel being basically an LCD computer monitor, thin, small, etc. They have some decent TVs out now in 37" size. But no clue how good Sonys are.
LCD projection tv being the larger size, 40" and up, with the lamp and actual projection going on. Just wasn't sure specifically which type you were asking about.

Epson manufacturers the majority of all "3-LCD" engines, with Sony being the only other company that does their own, since they're...Sony.

As for the flat panels, the Sharps and Sony's are usually the best, with Samsung and LG supplying some great panels along with the bulk of the mass-produced panels.

Should also check out the Mitsubishi 528's. Same basic engine as the Sony with added white level enhancement and a very slick system control built into the TV. $200 more for the extra goodies and a better picture.

why waste your money on an lcd projection, just man up and get a DLP, its the best projection technology out there.

if you are getting an LCD panel TV then get a sharp aquos, they own the sh!t out of everyone.

that's kind of a general statement...money no object? sure DLP is better, but it will cost you considerably more pixel for pixel.

if the dlp is not top of the line there can be color wheel issues and some claim that lcd provides a sharper picture than dlp.

i've seen both...i like both.

wow lots of useful info in this thread.
money IS an object here....thats why I want them to at brands other than Sony.
they want something that will mount on the wall...so that rules out DLP (although I agree that DLP is awesome)

and DLP is more $$$ than LCD or plasma? I was under the impression that DLP is cheaper....

First off it is Philips, and I agree, DLP is one of the best all round. I would not buy anything but Samsung DLP's though.

Yes, i am a samsung fanboy!!!
