Not sure if there are many of you here, but what the hell:
I'm a bit of a green thumb and would like to learn more about the subject. My particular interests lie in the scientific fundamentals of the field. If there is any required must-reads or horticultural "bibles", I'd like to know about them.
The literature in the field is vast and a bit overwhelming, so I'd like to narrow my search.

Not anything like that bfdd. I'm just generally interested in the subject as I have a bunch of different plant gardens with many different types of plants that I like to care for.
