300$ for wires, accessories, some dampening, and i installation

so 1500$ to get everything done

I was just planning on getting subs and an amp.

200$ amp
300$ for sub and custom box... or 200$ for decent sub and premade box

hook up using amp with speaker-level input or use line output converter.

not the most optimal setup, though. always a good idea to get good speakers.. subs just thump - need less accuracy

might as well get a 200$ bazooka type system if you some thump and not commit to a full upgrade

Subwoofer (can be wired in 1 ohm): http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_3309.html

Amplifier (1 ohm stable, 600 Watts, built in crossover): http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_6521.html

Ported Enclosure (good for rap and hip-hop): http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_7500.html

Sealed Enclosure (good for rock and metal): http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_1880.html

Line out Converter (In lieu of a head unit with sub output): http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_1729.html

Wiring Kit (you can spend a lot more and get a better kit, but this gets the lob done): http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_52.html

I did a 10" setup because the 10" Kicker L5's are in stock, but if you have the cash, a 12" setup will be more powerful.

Also, as LS20 mentioned, you will probably want to upgrade the entire sound system. The subwoofer will over power the components and make everything muddy. As a result you upgrade the components (hopefully with their own separate amp), but now the head unit is the weakest link, or the vibration is a problem, etc. Eventually you find that you have upgraded every part of your vehicles sound system.

Well I would just like to add some thumb, but I do see where you are coming from.
If the sound system in a BMW not very good, or just not as good as it _could_ be? :)

I listen to all types of music. A lot of hip hop, techno, rock.

Forgot you drove a BMW :p,

just ignore the part about upgrading speakers. I bet you could do better than the stock speakers, but they will sufficient :).

I have a bmw dsp system with 2 basslink II subs.

total cost: $500

sounds ok. It doesnt have deep pounding bass. Friend has 2 JL 12", now that has some deep sounding bass.

In my experience anything you can buy at places like circuit city have dirty sounding bass, but maybe they just like to crank that crap up way too loud in the stores.

Yeah, I suppose I could.

Well... how difficult is it?

In general, I don't really build things (other than computers, what a nerd), but if I had some instructions, then I would probably enjoy making a day of it.

The difficulty depends on the tools you have access to and the experience you have using them. You can simply slap together 6 panels and call it a day (with a big hole for the driver and a small hole for the input terminals) and still be ahead better off than a lot of commercial boxes, but it can get a lot crazier than that.

You'd need a table saw, clamps, electric hand drill with bits, and preferably a router, or at least a jig saw.

EDIT: You don't need a table saw if you build from a Sonotube.
