Is there any good "Switching" resources out there? I am trying to make the swtich from windows to OSX as my main machine. So far I really like it, but the little things piss me off. For example, I didnt know how to take screenshots until I finally broke down and asked a mac person and found that apple+shift+4 saves a screen shot.

I am looking for a website that helps with the "switch"

apple+shift+3 saves the complete screen, apple+shift+4 lets you take a screen of whatever you select.

As for switching resources, I don't really know of any. I know MacOSXHints.com is a good one for those neat little hints that aren't well documented.

ive been using a mac as my primary development machine at work (and am on it right now on Safari) for over a year.

i still, to this day, hate so much stuff about mac that is just so much more complicated than it has to be, and there are so many little tedious bugs that i do not understand why they weren't fixed.

i'm on tiger btw.

I use google for most of things like that.

I've been using my powerbook for a few months now, and I feel comfortable with it although there are still some things I'm getting used to. I'm also a bit irritated that I cant print on my Canon i950 properly (it's hooked up to my desktop PC and no matter what I do, it's not printing correctly)

I would like to see a resource on switching though, it would be helpful.

Wanna elaborate? my only complain is that their shortcut stadards get in the way of my productivity. For example i'd like to be able to set up single keyboard shortcuts in certain apps - ie Mail.app should mark message as read with just 'r'

here are 2 that i run into CONSTANTLY because when I download folders off the server here at work, they are all read only.

1. Download the folder and right click -> get info. I then click on the little triangle next to "Details" at the bottom, to get into the access area, and it expands off the screen, w/out any scroll bars at all. so i now cannot get down to the bottom of the window to change the access rights.

instead, you have to resize the window, THEN click the little triangle to expand, and THEN now it has scroll wheels.

2. (this is more of a design flaw that is tedious and annoying)

Now do what I just said, change the options to read/wright and click on "Apply to enclosed items". EVERY SINGLE TIME it comes up a dialog saying, "this is not undoable, continue?" and EVERY SINGLE TIME i click yes. and then on top of that, EVERY SINGLE TIME it asks me for the admin login/pw just to change this ... EVERY TIME.

and as I said, I do this often. it gets annoying.

not to mention, half of the time, it doesnt give me r/w access to all the enclosed items, as i so greatly pressed the button to do so.

there are many MANY more, but i dont wanna write an essay lol.

www.speg.com
System Preferences -> Keyboard & Mouse -> Keyboard Shortcuts

Cool one I learned yesterday is pressing Command + Control + D while having any word highlighted pops up a little thingy with the dictionary result for that word! I love it!

Edit: You can also create your own shortcuts for any app by specifying menu names!!

open terminal, navigate to the folder and do 'chmod -R 777 foldername'

There are a lot of things that gui stuff is just not efficent for. Thats why jesus invented unix.

yep but the apple key is where alt is, which is just plain awkward having it that clsoe to the space bar.

ArsTechnica has a little Switcher guide here. There are also tons of other ressources about Mac at Ars and a very active Mac forum.

The Mac section of AnandTech has some informative articles, too, especially "A month with a Mac" Part I and II.

To me the Ctrl key being so far away from the space bar feels awkward. :p
