a while ago I asked about the difference between a dj turntable and just a typical home stereo one.
while, I got a hold of a $10 fisher turntable and some good hip hop records and believe it or not it works pretty well for what I'm trying to do: just get some scratching sound effects (no mixing or beatmatching, etc)
I just disconnected the belt, took off the slip mat and stuck the record down with 2 strips of double-sided tape under the center label. I moved the balance all the way over so it puts so much pressure on that the whole cartridge sits on the record. and I turned up the anti-skate.
it works nicely but here's the problem: it's still really easy to make it skip when I'm scratching fast and hard, so I loose my place and have to find the sound again.
I know there are expensive needles that are designed to not skip when scratching, but what's the difference with those ones and could I maybe hack mine to act like one?
also, the whole platter on the turntable tilts easily, so I have to take extra care to not press very hard on the record, which is hard to do and still retain enough friction on your hand. are dj turntables made with bearings around the outside or something to keep the platter from tilting?
