I'm not drinking anyone's Kool-Aid. I was born and raised in Detroit and the surrounding areas. I know Detroit and its suburbs like the back of my hand. I know whats there, I am aware of what is going on in the city both negative and positive and I also know that people who sit around and talk shit about Detroit are most likely outsiders...ie, people outside of the Metropolitan area and people outside of the state of Michigan.

I don't listen to negativity about cities on TV and then pretend like I know what its really like.

I've lived in the area all my life and rarely hear it referred to as FMC. Fords is top. To me FMC is the Food and Machinery Corporation, original makers of the Bradley fighting vehicle.

Why do you insist on trolling? Do you even live in Michigan? Detroit has some ridiculously nice lofts downtown. Some are a LOT more than $1200/m and people still pay to live there. They have some along the Detroit River as well that most people on this forum can't afford...and tons of people live in them. Downtown Detroit is really nice and there is a lot of activities to do. Great food, great music, very talented people, and a lot of folks who are dedicated to investing and bringing the best to the city. Please don't speak on a city you've never actually been to. Stop drinking that "all of Detroit" is bad Kool-Aid.

This is true. But let's be real here, too... you can travel 1 or 2 blocks in the wrong direction and be in some serious ghetto. The nice areas of Detroit are pretty small, and as a percentage of land, is probably under 10%.

Exactly. There are places in every single city that suck. They just happen to make up a larger percentage of land area than other places in detroit.

This is pretty much true. Generalizations are strong with Detroit... and while it applies to a large chunk of Detroit, there are parts that are far from it.

We debated renting a condo downtown but only decided against it due to having a puppy. Couldn't find one we liked in an area that was animal friendly to our liking, while being affordable (I.E under $1500/mo).

You can get some pretty sweet condos along the river, but they are freaking expensive.

most major cities are like this. In SF the tenderloin is less than a mile away from Nob Hill, in Houston Montrose is about a mile away from the 3rd ward, etc. In most major cities you can make a wrong turn and end up in some extremely interesting areas.

I think those not familiar with the area would be surprised at how big the Metro area is. Detroit proper has a nice downtown and a few other small areas that are nice, but the rest of the city is not what I would call middle class. The city itself is probably 12 miles square and there are probably a half dozen close in suburbs that are also somewhat depressed, BUT once you get passed that you can travel miles and miles in any direction and the area is pretty nice. Dearborn, Ferndale, and Royal Oak will probably provide you with nice enough housing close into the city. Some parts of Dearborn that border on Detroit are a little shady, but hell at the other end of the city there are houses that are $1M+

I don't see how you're going to get anything more of value here until you know the location where you'll be working. You've heard all the spots to live. To refine it, you need to tell everyone how far in drive time you desire. That will be during good weather. Drive time will increase in the Winter. How much will depend on what time your work day starts. The counties are either broke or on tight budgets and plowing isn't done at the level it used to be.

Because some people are still impressed that they can type on a keyboard and the words show up on the internet. IRL, no one gives 2 shits. You will catch on to what the people who work there call it and that's all that matters.

It's definitely a Michigan thing. Meijers, Krogers, and Nordstroms are the three I hear most often. I don't hear "Fords" all that much, to be honest. People are not pleased when I correct them.
