over 700k people still live in the city of Detroit it cannot be that bad. News loves to sensationalize anything and everything. When I was looking to leave California a year ago Detroit was on my short list of places to move. Had I got a good offer from the area I would have moved there instead of Houston.
Yeah and there is a huge difference between Detroit proper and the majority of the surrounding suburbs.

There are some decent neighborhoods in and around Dearborn, but ghetto surrounds them. Canton, Bloomfield, Troy, or Ann Arbor would be my choices if you can afford 1k a month. AA might be a bit of a drive but it's so much better than the surrounding Dearborn area, IMO.

FMC = Ford?

First of all no one calls it FMC.

Took me 2 seconds or less to figure out what he meant by "FMC" in the context of "Detroit" (hint: "Detroit - The Motor City").

I'm not from Detroit, but I realize that everyone there would be very familiar with "FMC."

Dearborn has great food! Please try a place called CedarLand. I always get the half deboned chicken. Its like $12 but you get so much food and its SO good! As far as places to live, I like Birmingham, Novi, and places out that way. But it might be a bit of a drive back to Dearborn.

I think Canton is OK..but its far away. The only good thing about Canton is that Ikea is there.

Also, Downtown Detroit is pretty freakin nice. My friend has a loft downtown and its freaking amazeballs. Its in a renovated building and its crazy how nice it is. They are pretty pricey though. I think he pays $1200 a month to live there but the perks of living in the city are pretty nice. He can come out and go to Greektown or wherever he wants.

Pure Michigan: Royal Oak

The Detroit Metro area is pretty damn big. Oakland County is one of the highest income counties in the US. The Grosse Pointe's are ridiculously wealthy. Canton, Plymouth, Northville, Novi, Farmington (Hills), West Bloomfield, Royal Oak, Troy, Sterling Heights, etc etc. All nice. Some actually better than nice. Even the not so nice ones (something like Hazel Park or Redford) are just your run of the mill blue collar suburbs.

Detroit itself is a shithole.

Detroit? Smells like ass in here.

Close. Whenever I would get a job driving down on 94 or 75 through downtown at 7 am, all of sudden I would be looking at the dash for warning lights, seeing if flames were coming out from under the hood, wondering if someone else's car was catching on fire...oh wait. Nope. Just the foul stench of Detroit.

Royal Oak is nice but you better get there while you can. It's become increasingly popular since I was in HS and it might become the San Francisco (expensive to live in) of Oakland County.

Royal Oak had a serious boom and bust. It was stupid pricey, but that just means it got hit hard in the crash. It is recovering nicely, but anyone who bought at the wrong time (2004-2007 ish) is likely still underwater.

Royal Oak is overrated IMO. It's fun to go to occasionally, but not a great place to live due to traffic.

I live in van buren township and it is 20 min from Dearborn. I like it here--In the middle of Ann Arbor and downtown detoit. My car ins is about 1000 for 6 months for 2 cars (focus and mazda3). The detoit suburbs are far removed from downtown. Before I moved here I considered everything "detroit," now I think of everything as a separate city.
The worst part about the area is the weather is terrible. Freezing cold or too hot and humid. There is maybe 2 months of nice weather per year.

I had no clue what the hell FMC was either.

Then we took the boys to the Henry Ford Museum this morning and I considered snapping a pic of the giant FMC logo upon the front of a gigantic tomato harvester, but thought, "nah".

Learn something new at least a few days a week.

$1200 does not seem pricey at all for a loft in a city...of course it's still Detroit.

I can't believe the number of people that have no clue what FMC was. I bet they know everything about Pokemon though.

If you are from Detroit it is referred to as Ford's.

Why do you insist on trolling? Do you even live in Michigan? Detroit has some ridiculously nice lofts downtown. Some are a LOT more than $1200/m and people still pay to live there. They have some along the Detroit River as well that most people on this forum can't afford...and tons of people live in them. Downtown Detroit is really nice and there is a lot of activities to do. Great food, great music, very talented people, and a lot of folks who are dedicated to investing and bringing the best to the city. Please don't speak on a city you've never actually been to. Stop drinking that "all of Detroit" is bad Kool-Aid.

Negative people do nothing but sit around at their computer desks talking trash about cities in recovery.
