This friend 'Bill' I've met twice through my best friend gave me a call in the middle of nowhere tonight.

I had a pretty good impression of him, he seemed like a decent guy who went to Umass Amherst now works for IBM. We weren't directly friends but we kept in touch here and there last year.

He calls me in the middle of nowhere yesterday and leaves me a typical 'how have you been' msg. I called him back tonight and as I suspected he had a reason more than that for this sudden call.

He basically wanted me to attend an open house for the company IXP.NET he works for. He kept on reverberating about how he knows the top executives of the company personally and he wants me to get to know them and check out the career opportunities the company may offer.

From the VERY subtle nervous tone of his voice, it seems like he's involved with some kind of pyramid scheme or something that he'd benefit from me attending this conference and is not just his genuine interest for me.

By the end of the phone call, he also told me not to mention about this conference to any of our mutual friends because he wanted me to see things with my own eyes... (wtf?)

So what do you think he's doing? Maybe he's an Independent Rep trying to rake in some ppl?

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm........

i think i found my own answer.

The only way for him to continue making money in the "business" if you will, is to get reps(recruits). While he may get comissions from selling services, he and others really make the bulk of the money off recruiting and getting more reps. Usually, their is a "fee" of anywhere from $400 to whatever to cover supposed training materials that the company gives to you so you can know what to do. (You know that this money will go to pay the level system, even if the people say that they don't get paid by your materials fee). You also go to training sessions; all they really do is teach you that you make moeny off of referrals.

I've gotten a similar invitation from a company called Vartec, or Excel communications, and I'm pretty sure this is how this company works by the looks of it. The way I found out all of the above about excel and vartec was some reaserch on google which took a couple days. There isn't much info about these multi level marketing companies.

Of course I could be wrong in assuming this about this particular company, and if I am, call me stupid (logical fallacy, hasty generalization). You have nothing to loose by attending the conference. Just do not commit to anything untill you do some reaserch of your own.

I don't like multi-level marketing, and thats the reason I didn't, myself partake in the Vartec/Excel thing.

These are all over the place. I've had ppl come and try to talk to me on the subway, offering a very good opportunity. However they won't tell me about it right, then, i'll have to come and meet them to discuss it.

These people are scum, and so are the people who opt-in out of their own greed. They deserve what is coming to them.

"With IXP.net, www doesn't just stand for World Wide Web, it also stands for Win Win Win - Customers Win, Reps Win, and the Company Wins! It's a true formula for tuccess."

To make it seem legitimate, IXP.net hides behind the fake sales of internet access.

it is a pyramid scheme much like 2by2. check out 2by2.net or google for 2by2 for many of the stories.

Do not get involved, you won't make any money unless you are at the top.

First, it's a scam and you should stay as far away as possible from those idiotic pyramid schemes. Second, the person who called you to try to suck you into the scam has probably reached the stage where they realize that they have to get more suckers into the scam or they get screwed, so he's desperate. That should also tell you that he doesn't mind ripping you off to save his butt, which tells you enough about that person to never let them get anywhere near you......
