**ATOT** College Application Thread!!

Since a lot of people are applying to colleges/hearing from them...how about we have a thread for all the activities?

This can be on any colleges including undergrad/graduate/proffesional schools. It also doesn't even have to be on "where you got into" it could be on where you're applying to, advice on choosing schools, questions on financial aid, or even questions about potential schools... and yes you can brag or moan about schools u got into or didn't get into.

Let the discussion commence 🙂

As for me I'm applying to law schools right now:

Kentucky, Indiana, GMU, UPenn, Notre Dame, George Washington, Wisconsin, Washington and Lee, Chicago, William and Mary, Cornell, Boston U, Michigan, NYU, Harvard, Virginia, Columbia, Illinois, Duke, and *gasp* yes...USC

So far I've been accepted to Kentucky (super safety) and will hear from 3 Cornell, Penn, and Washington & Lee (from Early Action/Notification) before the end of December.

hahaha it took me the longest time to send my application to USC. My really good friend at UCLA kept pushing me to apply (he really likes the mentor program at USC). My cousin had to push me too as he told me that he would apply to Michigan for grad school even though he graduated from Ohio State. Yeah it took me a while but i was like what da hay...USC Law School is a good law school and it's not like I can even get into UCLA Law School.

Oh yeah it was kinda funny when I went to this law forum sponosred by USC at UCLA (USC, Chicago, Duke, and Berkeley were there) and the USC guy was like "Yeah don't worry when you go here...one day you'll wake up and suddenly decide that crimson kinda looks good on you...or maybe you'll start humming the fight song...." and everyone in the room started cracking up.

So who knows? If I get accepted (really big IF) i'll check it out though 🙂

Congratulations! I actually applied to Cornell Engineering and got waitlisted there. Ironically i got into better EE programs in Illinois and Michigan. Ah well ended up at UCLA though since I wanted to save $$$. From what the law school people tell me though, be prepared for people to mistaken you for actually living in NYC (3 hours drive away). 🙂

Haha, yeah, I actually only live like an hour away (will be 1.5 hours when I move in July), but yeah, whenever I tell people I live in NY, I have to clarify..."New York...but not New York City" so it won't be any different. 😉

Grrrrrrr. USC sent me their application (it's the size of an xbox) on December 2nd, getting at my house December 6th. That gave me, oh, 3 school days to possibly get the application in (no way in hell) to them by the 10th to apply for scholarships. Not that I'd actually get any from there, but still. And while we're at it, i'm pissed at the UC Regents, for making students have one performing art credit. I have a preforming/practical art credit, meaning I could take fashion production or food production and be able to graduate. Because of that, I can't apply, since I was too busy messing with test tubes and reading books to get behind a damn ceramics wheel. It's kinda my fault though, if I really wanted to go to a UC school, I should have looked at what classes they needed. And I digress.

Anyways, my actual question. I have somewhere between a 3.3-3.6 weighted GPA, a 31 ACT, and a 1220 SAT. I have some extracurricular activities that are legit, but not many (science research, academic team, marine bowl team, ), and some that are kinda shady that I could say i'm in (culinary club, a science competition team for a thing called JETS), and some that would be considered downright weird (Palm Bay High School Paintball Club, BBB Gaming Clan). And, as some might know, am self employed along with my brother, being entrepreneurs and running an e-business.

a.) should I even bother putting down SAT since my ACT is a lot higher?
b.) should I even say i'm in a gaming clan? I assisted with organization, I was leader of alpha team (at one point), and I helped with network/food/gaming related activities at LAN parties. and kinda related, should I try and get a letter of recommendation from the 30 year old SSgt or his 29 year old microbiologist wife, who are the leaders of my clan?
c.) The schools I'm thinking of applying to are as follows:
UF (the best bang for my buck, since i get 75% off tuition)
UCF (safety, 75% off tuition)
Northeastern
Washington University in St. Louis
BU
USC
UM
Which of these can I get into, besides UCF? I'm pretty sure I don't have a snowball's chance in hell of getting in the last 3 schools. Am I right?
d.) What other colleges would be good to apply for? I'm looking at either Boston/NYC or SoCal, and i'm thinking about engineering, but i'm really not sure of what I want to do.

this should be an obese thread. and cashman, if you see this, ya think we should say we are (well, for me 'were') in gaming clans?

Mmm not sure about a bunch of the questions but i know the UC system only takes the SAT. On some other schools though they really favor the ACT more. It depends on the school for the most part. For Boston area...you can also look at Boston College in addition to BU. For So Cal there's UC Irvine, UCLA, USC, Loyola Marymount. And apply to a school even if you're not sure u can get it. One of my friends just graduated from UCLA (non-engineering major)...but he got in with an SAT score way lower than yours 🙂

Your personal statement means a lot...so make sure it's good!

Damn, really? And I thought the ACT was popular out west. And I think you missed my rant where I don't think I can apply to UC schools 😛

I plan on making my personal statement good. I'm thinking of writing about my experiences at science fair, how gaming screwed up my life and how i overcame the addiction, my entrepreneurial experience (which I could tie in with my rents), and maybe discuss how underpaid teachers/police/firefighters are, if I get a prompt about current issues.

Heh...well the thing is I'm not familiar with the requirements anymore in terms of unit-wise. You should talk to ur career counselor (if u have a decent one) or just call one of the UC schools urself and ask about ur situation. Yeah SAT is big for the UC...the UC system is actually the biggest customer for the SAT's (that's why former President of the UC Atkinson got the SAT to change after he threatened to drop it as a pre-req).

Not sure about ur personal statement as to what u should write about, but just make sure a few people read it. Also make sure that some of ur close friends read it so that they know it sounds like you. E.g. ur not being an a-wipe when ur not...or ur not being too much of a softie when ur not. Not to mention it can't hurt if they can catch grammar/spelling mistakes 🙂

Hey Andrew, yea we are rather strange and I have my own local CS clan now. 😛 www.o3clan.net

ANYWHO...
My two schools that are my choice are the same as Andrew's, UF and UCF. I SUCK at the SAT and ACT so I'm not even mentioning my score, some of you ppl may remember what they are from past threads. I am already waiting for my application to be processed at UCF and my answer should be here in a week or two. I will apply to UF later, but I'm thinking of really going to UCF and majoring in Computer Science. I hold a 4.1 weighted GPA as of right now, so my grades are pretty damn good. The clubs I am in are TSA, Yearbook and I'm the Webmaster of my school! 😀

how gaming screwed up my life and how i overcame the addiction

HAH.
I am still there yet I'm doing fine. 🙂
AND I WILL ROXOR J00 IN CS! 😀

I applied last year to Shippensburg(state school, fallback), University of Pittsburgh, and Drexel. I really wanted to go to Drexel, but never htought I could go, cuz its so damn expensive, so last spring I had my tuition deposit in at Pitt(yea I got accepted into all 3), thinking Drexel was out of the picture, and then in March they planted a $9,000/yr academic scholarship under my nose 🙂 plus grants and whatnot, so here I am at Drexel.

Shippensburg still begs me to come there 😉 Just a few weeks ago I got something from them saying that ti was too late to register for fall courses but that they are still holding a spot for me for the spring term 😉

oh, and I got a 620 verbal 660 math SAT, high school GPA of like 3.7, top 15% class rank

Applied early to Notre Dame and Boston College (sorta strange for an agnostic, but whatever), and regular for Cornell and Dartmouth. And if I don't get into either BC or ND (should know for at least ND by the end of this week/early next), I'm going to have to find a safe school fast.

Stats
1440 SAT (720 both)
94 average (Probably somewhere between 3rd through 5th in my class of approximately 180)
Varsity Football, Track and Field for extracurriculars

The only thing I'm worried about is I'm not sure whether or not my personal statement is very good. I sort of rushed it to make the deadline, and did all the proofreading and everything myself.

Applied early to MIT - I hear this week...I hope.
Anyone know when MIT is replying back to earlies?

Applying to
Cornell, CMU, Caltech, RPI, Duke and NYU perhaps
Math with Compsci or Engineering will be my major...haven't decided yet

1540 SAT
97.5 GPA
Many a club, a few sports, a decent essay and some clear answers foy my questions.

In UC's application, they convert ACT to SAT in order to calculate scholarship. i.e. ACT 31 converts to 1380 in SAT I.

w00h00! Got a call from the Assistant Dean of Admissions at George Mason University Law School and was told I got in...they'll be mailing out my letter on Thursday.

Also got the letter from Wisconsin telling me I got in, too!

🙂

Good think you got in on a lot of clubs. This kid from my school got a 1600 on his SATs, a sick weighted GPA (like 110ish), and was not accepted to Harvard, mainly because he didn't get involved with a lot of clubs.

I'm applying to ND law school too...so if i get in maybe i'll see ya there! (oh and i applied to BU instead of BC for law school 😉)
