I've got a friend getting ready to head off to culinary school and I would like to buy her a nice set of knives for while she is away. What is a good set that includes carrying case?

anything forged and by a reputable manufacturer

of course, without a budget your request is impossible to answer.

Have Forschner knives improved over the past 3 or so decades?

My folks have a couple from the 70s and they don't hold an edge worth a damn.

I've always been a fan of Chicago Cutlery. My stainless set from them has lasted 15 years now.

Why, a CutCo knife set of course :sneaky:
Ban.

My folks actually bought a set a couple of years ago for ~$400 off of their pastor's son. I had to browbeat them into sending it back.

Check with her first. The school may require that she purchase a particular kit from the school.

If she can supply her own, she just needs a chef's knife, a paring knife, and maybe a boning knife and a bread knife. Another cheap paring knife that you can abuse is nice to have too. Oh, and a steel.
Howard's Victorinox selections are excellent. Save the expensive knife gift for graduation, when she'll know a lot more about what she wants in a knife.
