Concealed carry has been a popular topic in my neck of the woods lately. The owner of my workplace and the chief of security both are outdoorsmen and personal carry advocates. I was pleased to see them spearhead and organize a CCW course at reduced costs for employees. Definitely a breath of fresh air considering all the other places out there that are hostile to the notion of law-abiding employees carrying guns.

Some of my coworkers are relatively new to firearm ownership, and some of them are ex military and LEOs, so there has been lots of talk in the office about what to carry, how to carry it, etc.

I realized I've never asked this of the AT crowd, and am genuinely curious: for the CCW holders here, what are you packing and why?

I myself and about to make the transition away from .38 revolver to a semi auto in 9mm. Springer XD subcompact for me, although I do keep thinking about Kahrs...

Anyone got any good holster recommendations for me?

All depends on if you are carrying for protection against people or animals, like bears. One thing to consider is if a bear is on top of you, your automatic will have a hard time, but a 357 magnum revolver will still fire since you don't need to chamber a round or leave room for slide movement. I can't carry here in NJ as permits are next to impossible to get. If I could it be my S&W .40 auto or a Beretta 90-Two in either .40 or .45 caliber.

I carry a 9mm semi. Taurus Millennium Pro to be specific, with a Crossbreed IWB holster.

Carrying a semi-auto without a round chambered is pointless.

You might as well conceal carry a brick and just throw it at the baddy.

I'm interested in what you guys are carrying, I wasn't really asking for advice on what I should carry.

You can carry a round in the chamber with Glocks and XDs no problem, although some still prefer not to. Regardless, that example is a poor one. If you have a bear on top of you no handgun is going to stop you from getting messed up. Their blood pressure is rather low, so even after a good hit or two from hunting rounds they can still have enough life in them to work you over before they expire. Also, in this hypothetical bear wrestling match the odds of you shooting yourself during this scramble for the gun are fair. You'd be better off getting on your belly, covering head and neck, and playing dead. Whenever I'm off in the bush I always have a long gun with me, but honestly I'm more worried about moose than bears.
I hear you on the .45, I too am a fan. Came very close to grabbing a G36, but in the end having double the ammo capacity made me rule out the .45 for carry.

Holster: .38 taurus pocket=desatis nemisis
Glock 26= fobus

A buddy that's 6'4" ~170lbs always wears a button shirt over a tee. .45 in a shoulder rig w/extra mags on the opposite side. Unnoticeable.

I carry a kahr p9 in a holster from whitehatholsters.com at 3 o'clock.

I initially had a kahr pm9 for its weight and thinness, but found that the slide was a little too short to comfortable sling shot. The little bit of slide and grip length in the p9 was the best for me.

If kahr still made the p9 covert (shorter grip like the pm9 but longer slide like p9), it would be perfect. Of course, I could cut down the grip on my p9, but if I ever have to use it, I don't want to deal with the fact that I "cut down" my weapon in court.

I'm 5'9" and 160, a pretty thin guy, but unless I was crouched down and looking forward so that the grip sticks out, you wouldn't be able to tell.

The "hybrid" holsters are all the range these days. A kydex shell for the weapon and a leather backing between you and the weapon seems to be a good compromise. Aside from whitehatholsters, you have mtac with their minotaur, crossbreed with their super tuck and mini tuck, kholster, oldfaithfulholsters and a variety of other ones down to guys who probably do it out of their home and mainly operate on gun forums.

You should also think about the belt holding the guy if you're going to carry it at the waist. The wilderness instructor is a pretty good standard for a nice cheap, sturdy belt without paying 80+ for a leather one from any of the big names like the holster makers above or someone like the beltman. I think it is a hassle to take on and off though, so I made the move to a "rigger" belt with a "cobra" clasp like the ares ranger belt or a similar one from jones tactical. I ended up getting one from endeavor stitchworks. Here is a link to a discussion regarding these belts.

I want to get another one. I had a p89 with the houge grip as my 1st hand gun. I want another one for nestolgia.

Current I switch between my S&W 1911 and HK P2000 for IWB carry. I have a Diamondback 380 for pocket carry.

Just picked up an H&K P2000 SK 9mm. CCW will be legal in WI starting on Nov 1st - finally! (49th state to legalize...pathetic, but at least we beat IL) Taking a CCW class next week. Already took a hunter safety course in the past and carried a duty weapon while employed as a security guard in my college days; had to take a ton of training for that.

That was my first handgun - sold it to my father in law 7 years ago or so...just tried to buy it back for nostalgia's sake, as mentioned by another poster above, but he didn't want to sell it. :(

I'd like to know WHY many of you carry.

I'm all for guns and have many of them. I might consider CCW if I didn't live in California, where I assume it's almost impossible to get CCW permit. But I really don't see the need to carry everywhere I go anyway. Does it just make you feel more confident and comfortable? Do you really live in fear that you might need to use it? There is a 99.99% chance I won't need it and it's likely to cause more trouble than it's worth.

I have 2 of them ,blued a stainless with hogue grips. The blued is the older and my favorite, the slide rattles from being shot so much but it still eats +p+ like gun candy and is more accurate

I dont think there should be a right answer. Obviously if its wintertime and you have on big bulky clothes you could conceal a full sized 1911. Come summer with shorts and a t shirt you need a different approach.

I think a guy should have a few different options in his concealed carry tool chest.

So what you are saying is you really dont care why, you've convinced yourself its a danger to do so so rather than just come out and say how fucking piss your pants scared you are of people with scary guns you did it under the disguise of a question?

My town is full of illegals and they cause violent crime.
I'd post an article about a fella running a fake ID ring and beating & killing people in my town but it has strangely disappeared from the internets.

I've carried 4 different guns day to day. My favorite was a kimber ultra carry paired in a crossbreed supertuck worn at about 3-4 oclock. I also have carried a Keltec P-11 when I needed to deep conceal in my pocket, but I never was able to get used to DAO and got rid of it. I've also limited carried both a Ruger SR9 and XD45 4". The SR9 feels great because it's so thin, and I could carry 17+1 in the full size very comfortably. The XD is a bit thicker and printed a bit more, but was quite light with the polymer frame and is probably the pistol I shoot best with. I'll be carrying the XD daily once I get back to Washington state.
