Planning to do a couple overnighters in Harriman State Park plus at least one in the Catskills. Last summer did my first two overnighters - what a natural high those were. Can't wait to get out there again. Anybody else here new to backpacking vs car camping?

Come south to Monongahela National Forest and see Spruce Knob & Spruce Knob-Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area, Dolly Sods, Otter creek.

I really want to do a trip to Monongahela. Came across it while messing around on Google maps and looking at large areas of green, and the name stuck with me. Is there any kayaking down the river that goes right through it? Looks like it's called Shaver's Fork?

I'm just waiting on the lake to come up so I can get the boat out and do some fishing!

That's pretty cool, do you ratchet up that side platform somehow? Never saw anything like that.

Only been backpacking along the river to the Shavers fork falls and that was within the National forest but sure seems that others have. Very secluded for being navigable in the mid Atlantic area and supposedly drinkable.

Shaver Fork Falls - Fisherman sitting at falls under arrow at left for scale.

I would like to go somewhere where the silence actually hurts your ears. Where you can't hear the modern world at all. Just me (or with the wife) our tent and stuff and awesome scenery.

The main dock is fixed with a 5000lb boat lift. I built the side dock 12'x15'as a swim platform at the same time (my design). It has 2 dog ears with 4-sided piling guides. The rear posts are locked in with plate steel. The front of the platform has 2 single rollers mounted on it to keep it from twisting too much during bad wakes.

It has over 4000lbs of floatation under it, so ratchets aren't required... It raises and lowers with the lake. October-March, they drop water to work on the dams and plan for mountain snow melt/spring storms.

OK well I've taken a day off to make a long weekend in April to do a hiking camping trip. Don't even know where yet. As I stated before I would love to go to a place in NY state away from cities. But can't decide where. Keep looking at Adirondacks but it's so big I have know idea where to go. Maybe even Pennsylvania.
Somebody throw some suggestions out there lol.

Some hiking pics from the Bitterroot Valley in Montana, out in the woods or on our property in July. Going back up in two weeks, can't wait! And yes, I realize my DSLR skills aren't great.

I'd be happy with 3-4 overnight climbing trips in the Cascades, and maybe the Olympics:

I'll also go on at least 8+ hikes throughout the summer (ideally in the 10 mile R/T range with 3k-4k feet elevation gain).

And of course a visit to my parents in northern MN (Grand Rapids area), where I'll probably do some canoeing on lakes and the Mississippi (where it's a tiny little river).

-7 Lakes Basin area in the Olympic National Park (be a 2-3 nighter there)
-Pacific Crest Trail from Stevens Pass to Snoqualmie Pass (75 miles is...try to do it in 4 nights)
-Wonderland Trail (90 mile circle around Mt. Rainier...6 or 7 nights probably maybe more though)

The high divide loop (7 lakes basin) has been at the top of my list for like 3 years now! I think I'll do it as a solo trip in the fall... don't know whether to make it a 1 night or 2 night trip.

I've been thinking about the PCT between the passes for a while but never got around to it... not sure if I'll do it. Plus last year there was a massive detour that added at least 10 miles.

I'd love to do the whole Wonderland, but I think my max is 3 days. I went on a 4 day climbing trip and got blisters on my heels about 3"x2", which made it hard to walk for about 2 weeks after.

Well I finally committed to doing SOMETHING soon... The fam and I are going on a 3 day/2 night hiking camping trip on the Batona Trail in the Pine Barrens here in South Jersey. No trailer just packs and tents. Can't wait.

Yeah i hadnt really been that interested but a friend wanted to go up and check it out so figued it would be a good one to go on. Supposed ot be a great area

Yeah its long but everything i have read and heard makes it sound like one of the best hikes in WA. Not a road or anything for 70 miles. If you do Stevens to Snoqualmie ive heard if you even see people they are going northbound so its not much more than a quick passing. Hopefully the snow melts early enough and i can do it in July (be pushing it i htink) otherwise ill have to do it next year

Thats one i am more doing just to say i did it rather than being super excited about it. Heard it can be "crowded" especially around longmire and sunrise due to over nighters and day hikers so you only really get 2 nights away from things. Plus the food caching at the ranger stations. But ill do it one of these years

On public land? If so, can you at least pick up your casings and phone after it's shot? If private land, do whatever you want. I used to go to Carson National forest and got so sick of seeing casings and shot up TVs and computers littering the place. I am a redneck too, but it is just annoying to see that stuff when you are trying to enjoy nature.

Being back in Ohio there is nowhere to hike, and although I have a friend who lives "in the country" nothing here will compare to the places I backpacked in Nevada, California and New Mexico.
